Hourly pay: $17/hr.
The City of Alexandria, Louisiana is seeking non-law enforcement civilians to provide support to public safety.
Overview:
The Community Service Officer 1 is a non-sworn employee of the City of Alexandria and is designated as a civilian position. A Community Services Officer provides law enforcement support, performing various duties, which assist other departments – principally public safety. CSO’s provide customer service to citizens, crime deference and prevention activities, non-EMS on-site to citizens, and other non-criminal police related duties and more. This position does not possess the authority to make arrests and do not carry firearms.
Essential Functions

The CSO 1 is a non-sworn employee of the Legal Division organized within SafeAlex and under the daily direction of the Commissioner of Public Safety, also closely affiliated with the Division of Community Services. Serves as a “good will ambassador” by providing friendly, helpful customer service to the general public
Basic community policing duties, oversee and monitor city parks, community engagement and outreach activities, respond to mental health calls, monitor and assist unhoused or people experiencing homelessness, monitor and patrol special events and festivals, monitor and patrol city bus station, conduct Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) evaluations and make recommendations
Work closely with SafeAlex, APD, and AFD to support and enhance existing community outreach programs such as neighborhood watch meetings, crime prevention seminars, school presentations, and public safety summer camps.
Maintain cordial public relations with businesses, as well as other governmental entities to share valuable information, better resolve problems and provide enhanced customer service to the public.
Conduct regular patrols of the community looking for safety hazards, persons in need of assistance, identify and resolve any non-criminal complaints in the public, at City parks, City facilities, and City Hall.
Conduct school safety programs and educational presentations.
Assists with emergency response activities and disaster preparedness efforts.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED. Experience in operating a computer and/or most other office equipment.
Training: Relative training from the Alexandria Police Academy such as communication skills, basic self-defense tactics, de-escalation techniques, CIT training, community engagement techniques, police communication, first aid and CPR training.
Special Requirements: Must be a U.S. citizen aged 25 years or older. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. Available to work flexible hours, holiday, and weekends. Must be able to clearly speak and communicate on police radio system.
Physical Demands and Working Environment: Frequent exposure to general office environment, outdoor weather conditions, vehicular traffic, loud noise levels. Requires some agility and physical strength, such as occasionally conducting traffic control for long periods of time or standing or walking most of the work period. Occasionally, work may require lifting heavy objects up to 60 lbs. and carrying them. There may be need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials and to generally perform the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear on the radio and/or phone or in person. The job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, working with hand tools on lockouts, and operating a motor vehicle. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Limitations
Community Service Officers 1 are limited and prohibited from participating in various aspects of law enforcement duties such as:
- Crimes in progress
- Fights in progress
- Alarms
- Traffic stops
- Domestic disturbances
- Noisy parties
- Suspicious persons, vehicles, and noises
- Any other activity which would constitute a hazard for an unarmed officer
