What You Should Bring
Our ideal candidate will be certified as a polygraph examiner, meeting standards set by the American Association of Police Polygraphists (AAPP), the American Polygraph Association (APA) and the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations (DPOR). The Opportunity – Examples of Work
- Conducts pre-examination interviews and criminal investigations, administer polygraph examinations to persons in connection with internal investigations or pre-employment selection procedures for City public safety departments.
- Consults, reviews, and evaluates case facts or background information packets before each examination.
- Writes comprehensive reports on polygraph examinations conducted and maintains confidential files. Schedules for polygraph examinations.
- Calibrates polygraph instrument and maintains calibrator records; Maintains polygraph instrument in good operating condition.
- Attends training seminars to keep abreast of trends and techniques in polygraph examinations.
- Provides supervision and training to new polygraph examiners, during 6–10-month internship.
- Archives, labels, and stores polygraph exams; Keeps equipment in good working order and ensures compliance with all security and confidentiality concerns.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of polygraph examination; thorough knowledge of the psychological and physiological aspects of polygraph; thorough knowledge of the value and limitations of polygraph results; thorough knowledge of polygraph techniques, chart analysis and interpretations; thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations related to administration of polygraph; ability to maintain confidentiality and security of examinations; thorough knowledge of interview and interrogation techniques; ability to conduct, analyze and draw conclusions from polygraph examinations; ability to establish, maintain and adjust polygraph schedules; ability to collect, assemble, review and maintain information; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with superiors, co-workers, and subjects; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; good knowledge of the applicable State laws and standards governing the administering of polygraph examinations; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
Two-Year College degree; graduation from an accredited polygraph school approved or recognized by the American Polygraph Association; successful completion of a polygraph internship recognized by the VA Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (VA DPOR); three years of polygraph examination experience, preferably in law enforcement; three years of law enforcement investigative experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be a fully licensed Polygraph Examiner in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
