What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at City of Alexandria, VA?
Responsibilities:
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, buffs, and waxes floors;
- Dusts and cleans offices, and polishes furniture;
- Washes windows, walls and mirrors;
- Cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes restrooms and replenishes supplies;
- Helps move office and building furniture and equipment, and prepares rooms for meetings;
- Replaces light bulbs, cleans and polishes brass, and unstops lavatories;
- Empties waste cans and ash trays;
- Maintains a variety of cleaning equipment;
- Notifies supervisor of materials that need to be ordered;
- Reports more difficult and major repairs;
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs;
- Maintains immediate outdoor areas;
- Raises and lowers flags;
- Delivers plastic bags;
- Clears snow off police vehicles;
- transports police vehicles as necessary;
- Removes snow from sidewalks;
- Loads and unloads large shipments of supplies;
- Transports disposable evidence to dump;
- Paints, and installs carpets and tints windows;
- Hand washes snow removal vehicles;
- Defrosts refrigerators;
- Checks for and changes burnt out or defective light bulbs;
- Reports damaged fixtures;
- Monitors recycling and appropriately disposes of its contents;
- Ensures ample copy paper is available near copiers on each floor of worksite;
- Shreds confidential papers;
- Cares for plants and shrubbery by watering, trimming and pruning as necessary;
- Assists in care, feeding and watering of Nature Center's live animals, greenhouse plants, and fish in aquarium;
- Returns trash bins to the appropriate area after trash pick up;
- Hangs pictures;
- Performs maintenance of nature trails and cleans park of litter;
- Loads and unloads large shipments of supplies;
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to operate powered automatic scrubbers, buffers, and sweepers as required; ability to work safely without hazard to self and/or others; and sufficient physical strength to withstand the strain of working long hours in performing cleaning work. Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions in English
- Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs. on a regular basis without help and carry custodial materials, office supplies, furniture, tools, and other materials in a safe and secure manner
- Must have a valid local driver's license and be insurable by the Alexandria Library’s insurance company
- Must own or have regular access to an automobile, and must be able to travel to different locations - when needed. Employees will be reimbursed .625 cents per mile driven for work-related purposes

Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the Alexandria Library and will include evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays.
