An Overview
Ensures that the City's programs, services, policies, and procedures are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other disability-related laws and regulations. Conducts research and analysis, and interprets the impact of disability-related laws and regulations on the City and persons with disabilities. Educates the public and employees on the ADA and other disability-related laws and regulations. Responds to inquiries, resolves complaints, and coordinates referral to appropriate and available community and legal resources at the local, State, and Federal levels. Reviews employee and resident reasonable accommodation requests and provides input and resolution on determinations. Collaborates with all City departments, businesses, and nonprofits. Addresses the rights of persons with disabilities and provides counsel on advocacy efforts. Promotes opportunities for people with disabilities. Maintains knowledge on current information and best practices. Serves as staff to the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities.
About the Department
The Alexandria Office of Human Rights was established to combat discrimination, increase equal opportunity and protect human rights for persons who live, work, or visit in Alexandria.
The Office enforces the Alexandria Human Rights Code, passed in 1975 as one of the first local human rights laws in Virginia, by receiving and investigating complaints of discrimination under the Code and applicable federal and state laws.
As a Fair Employment Practices Agency (FEPA) under contract with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Office also receives and investigates complaints of employment discrimination filed under federal antidiscrimination laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. The Office also houses the ADA Coordinator.

- Please note, this position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Expert knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws and regulations dealing with accessibility and the civil rights of persons with disabilities. Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation, mediation, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Exceptional customer service and problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks. Ability to research, analyze, and make sound policy and procedural decisions and recommendations.Four-Year College Degree; at least one year of local, State, or Federal government experience. At least two years conducting research and analysis; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Awareness of disability culture and respect for diversity.Three years of experience in local, state, or federal government, at least five years of conducting research analysis, and knowledge of the ADA and other accessibility-related guidelines and standards.
