Building Your Power/ Temporary Part-Time Recreation Leader II

Overview
Building Your Power is a mentoring program designed to promote healthy community relationships and reduce truancy and other risky behaviors in middle school students through positive engagements, and connection to afterschool, weekend, and summer programs and jobs. The Recreation Leader II will manage a caseload of up to 13 youth to support individual development through skill-building and increasing productive connections to and engagement with our community. The Recreation Leader II will be well-versed in community resources and social-emotional skill development. Training will be provided, along with ongoing support from program managers, Alexandria City Public School staff, and community partners. This position requires in-person after school, evening and weekend work at various locations throughout the City of Alexandria.
The Opportunity
- Manage caseload of up to 13 middle school youth referred to program due to truancy and/or behavior referrals
- Develop individualized service plans for each youth; review school reports and collaborate with youth, families, program managers, and school staff to monitor youth progress and update goals as needed
- Teach relevant life skills lessons on a variety of topics including conflict resolution, problem-solving, and building healthy relationships
- Connect youth with prosocial programs, activities, and/or jobs
- Connect youth and families with applicable community resources
- Plan and facilitate occasional group activities and/or events
- Actively participate in trainings and staff meetings
- Administer surveys and support program evaluations
- Ensures all safety precautions and guidelines are followed
- Performs related work as required
High School Diploma and two (2) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training.
- Passion for supporting prosocial youth development
- Experience with diverse socioeconomic groups and cultures
- Proficient English language skills – reading, writing, and speaking
- Actively pursuing or completion of a degree in sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, criminal justice, legal studies, education, exercise science, or related field
- Experience working independently and as part of a team
- Experience working with at-risk youth, families, schools, therapeutic recreation, youth sports programs, and/or other support services programs
- Bilingual English/Dari, English/Spanish, or English/Pashto
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, community members, and staff
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Basic knowledge of the Alexandria community and resources available to youth and families
This program is made possible through the Virginia Youth Violence & Substance Use Grant Program through the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and this position is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.
The position required successful completion of a criminal background check prior to employment.
Salary : $20 - $21
