Deputy Sheriff Sergeant
(This is a promotional position for current non-probationary Alexandria Sheriff’s Office deputy sheriff's only)
A deputy sheriff sergeant has the responsibility of first-line supervision of a section/unit/team within Judicial Services, Field Operations, Training and Accreditation, Facility Services, Detention Center security teams, or Investigations, Policy and Oversight. A sergeant may participate in the work performed by subordinate staff when required to do so and also act in the capacity of a deputy sheriff lieutenant in his/her absence after a probationary period is completed. Supervision is exercised over the work of deputy sheriffs and professional civilian staff. The work is performed in accordance with Sheriff's Office policies and procedures which includes general orders and standard operating procedures. Work is reviewed by inspection, through oral, and written reports and by results obtained.
Illustrative examples of work
- Plans, directs, coordinates, and manages the daily activities of a team of subordinate deputy sheriffs and professional staff;
- Ensures daily courthouse and civil process operations are maintained at a safe, secure, and proficient level;
- Maintains and upkeeps numerous documentation files including but not limited to equipment inventories and inspections, civil process fee files, executed levy files, judge profiles, statistical information, staff training and supervisory files, and any other documentation required to be kept available either by law or accreditation standards;
- Reviews various documentation filed in daily shift packages and other resources;
- Establishes post assignments daily;
- Obtains information from previous shift supervisor. Briefs team about previous shift activities;
- Fills in as shift watch commander if needed;
- Assists in and facilitates roll call training, schedules tests, and helps maintain current proficiency and remains in compliance with state and local training standards;
- Uses MakeNOTE software to document performance of subordinates;
- Prepares bi-annual and annual personnel performance evaluations;
- Conducts planning sessions and progress discussions with staff;
- Conducts uniform and weapons inspections;
- Augments line staff tasks if needed;
- Conducts facility inspections ensuring safety and cleanliness;
- Prepares time and attendance reports and submits correct time sheets;
- Ensures all new arrest paperwork is submitted and correct;
- Coordinates with the magistrate the timely and proper release of arrestees;
- Coordinates with the United States Marshals Service in reference to housing federal inmates;
- Reviews fingerprints and photos for legibility, and submission to federal, state and local agencies;
- Reviews all booking computer transactions for completeness;
- Ensures collection of and submission of required DNA evidence to State Forensics Department;
- Reviews and ensures release paperwork and records time computations are complete and correct;
- Reviews staff reports and memorandums for completeness and submission;
- Ensures medical staff clears new arrestees for admission;
- Monitors possible suicidal inmates;
- Conducts supervisory inspections of the first floor, booking and the Control Center;
- Ensures all logs and forms are complete and correct;
- Ensures follow up is conducted by Mental Health and Medical staff;
- Meets and briefs the on-coming Booking sergeant about shift events;
- Collects and maintains documentation for ACA, CALEA, DOC, and PREA standards and provides this documentation to the accreditation manager or the PREA coordinator;
- Performs related work as required.
High school diploma or GED; and currently serving as an Alexandria Sheriff's Office deputy sheriff. As of March 17, 2025, the applicant must have three years of continuous service from the current date of hire.
Employees in this class must:
- Successfully complete all pre-service and in-service training as required by the Virginia State Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Sheriff's Office, including firearms qualification; and
- Possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.
GENERAL
Participation in this promotional process for deputy sheriff sergeant is voluntary. Candidates on-duty during any phase described below will be excused from duty and leave will not be charged. Candidates who are not on duty during the phases described below must have their schedules adjusted by their supervisor to allow for the participant to be in an on-duty status while participating in this process.
*It is the responsibility of each candidate to notify their direct supervisor of their intent to participate in this process and coordinate flex time or an excused absence from their post.
PROMOTIONAL PROCESS SCHEDULE & UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS
This promotional process will consist of three phases:
Phase I – Orientation link and manual review (mandatory)
Phase II – Multiple Choice examination (20% of total score)
Phase III – Assessment Center (80% of total score):
- Emergency Simulation exercise (30% of total score)
- Leadership exercise (30% of total score)
- In basket exercise (20% of total score)
*Candidates must arrive on time for each phase of the promotional process.
PHASE I – ORIENTATION
The mandatory candidate orientation is designed to familiarize candidates with all aspects of the examination and assessment center and provide candidates with helpful information about the promotional process.
At the conclusion of the closing date of this announcement, an e-mail will be sent to all eligible candidates. The e-mail will include instructions on how to access the online Assessment Center Orientation from Emergency Services Consulting International – Human Capital Division.PHASE II- MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAMINATION
The multiple-choice examination will be conducted on March 17, at 10:00 a.m. This exercise will be conducted on the third floor of 2003 Mill Road, Alexandria, Virginia. All questions and answers will be based on the source material as outlined in this announcement. The results of the examination will constitute 20% of the candidate’s final score in the promotional process. Uniform for this phase is the class C uniform, long or short sleeve (polo), with no nametag or identifying pins or medals. Failure to arrive on time will result in removal from the sergeant’s process.
PHASE III - ASSESSMENT CENTER EXERCISES
The assessment center will be conducted on the third floor of 2003 Mill Road, Alexandria, Virginia during the week of March 17. Each candidate will be evaluated by a panel of trained assessors. Throughout the assessment center, candidates will assume the role of a sergeant and participate in the exercises as if he/she were holding that rank. The results of the assessment center will constitute 80% of the candidate's final score in the promotional process. The assessment center will consist of the following three exercises: emergency simulation exercise, leadership exercise and in-basket exercise.
Individual schedules will be confirmed following the closing of this announcement. Uniform for this phase is the class A uniform, long sleeve, with no nametag or identifying pins or medals. Failure to arrive on time will result in removal from the sergeant’s process.

Candidates will be required to fully complete and submit the deputy sheriff sergeant promotional application by February 20, 2025. No applications will be accepted after this time and date. ELIGIBILITY LIST
Based on the results of this promotional process, candidates will be placed in one of the following categories: CATEGORY I, CATEGORY II, or CATEGORY III. The list of eligible candidates will expire six months from the release date of the eligibility list unless previously exhausted. After this date, the period during which the eligibility list is in effect may, at the sole discretion of the Sheriff, be extended for three additional six month periods.
During the effective period of the eligibility list, the Sheriff will select deputy sheriff sergeants to be promoted from CATEGORY I. The Sheriff reserves the right to select from CATEGORY II, even if candidates are remaining in CATEGORY I. Should CATEGORY I be exhausted prior to the expiration of the eligibility list, the Sheriff reserves the right to select deputy sheriff sergeants from CATEGORY II or to direct another promotional process.
Before selecting a candidate for promotion, the Sheriff reserves the right to interview candidates and will consider the performance records of candidates as documented in their squad, personnel, and internal affairs investigative files. Decisions to promote or not promote candidate(s) are the sole discretion of the Sheriff. Candidates not selected may be reconsidered during the effective period of the eligibility list. Candidates in CATEGORY III will not be considered for promotion to the grade of deputy sheriff sergeant during the effective period of the eligibility list.
PROBATIONARY APPOINTMENT
All appointments are made at the discretion of the Sheriff and serve at the pleasure of the Sheriff. All appointees will serve a one-year probationary period.
