An Overview
An Engineering Aide II performs a variety of technical and skilled paraprofessional work in an office environment providing skilled support to professional engineers and plan reviewers in Land Development Services in Planning and Zoning. An incumbent in this position performs such tasks as the verification of minimum submission requirements of site and grading plans, providing information to customers regarding the City’s plan submission process, and maintaining development plan technical statistics. Incumbents in this position must be able to read plats and construction plans, and demonstrate competency in performing mathematical calculations. The incumbents seek supervision and guidance from professional members of the engineering staff, and the immediate supervisor, as needed.
The Opportunity
Works under the direct supervision of the Development Engineering Division Chief;
- Reviews submissions of site plans, grading plans and other applications submitted by builders, engineers or architects for minimum submission standards, and determines routing among City Departments for plan review;
- Answers inquiries from outside agencies and general public on matters concerning development projects status and processes questions;
- Maintains documents pertaining to Site Plan reviews within the City’s online permitting system and helps applicants upload their applications;
- Maintains files for City development projects, plans and profiles, maps, site plans, right-of-way plats, subdivision plats, easement plats, and other similar documents and materials;
- Prepares, reviews and distributes bond packages;
- Acts as liaison between developers and City Officials during the review process, and prepares notification letters concerning ongoing reviews;
- Prepares documents for permanent record and archiving;
- Performs record searches for customers under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
High School Diploma or GED, with successful completion of college-level courses in engineering, architecture, physics, mathematics; at least three years of engineering technician-level experience, at least one year of which must have been performed at the level of Engineering Aide I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
This position is currently vacant, so the city is interested in candidates who can start quickly. As such, the preferred candidates have the following experience and skills:
- Familiarity with grading plan and site plan review process, including engineering technician practices and standards in order to prepare plan routings and compile comments through Energov (called APEX in Alexandria) and/or other online permitting systems
- Knowledge of local governmental procedures affecting public works, materials, methods and techniques of public works construction is desired.
- Experience with calculation of and administration of application fees for development applications.
- The ability to work with property owners, contractors, and the general public and to establish positive working relationships
- Strong communications skills both verbally and in writing.

Salary : $46,787 - $62,672
