Under supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, the Senior Traffic Painter performs skilled work in traffic line and legend painting; installs and maintains traffic signs and sign posts; fabricates traffic signs; leads an assigned crew; and performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED :
Supervision is provided by the Public Works Superintendent or their designee.
Essential Job Functions
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following : (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Performs work in traffic line and legend painting; installs and maintains signs and posts; fabricates traffic signs; updates sign inventory and keeps daily records; measures and lays out regulation traffic lines on City streets by checking and reading work orders and blueprints approved by Traffic Engineering; paints traffic lines using a traffic line striper and thins and mixes paint to proper consistency to enable the effective application; paints pavement markings including legends, school crossings, and crosswalks; paints City curbs to regulate parking; installs and repairs signs; replaces defective, destroyed, or damaged traffic signs; fabricates and places traffic signs to regulate, safeguard, and expedite traffic; installs and places traffic directional pavement buttons in accordance with the specifications and blueprints utilizing epoxy; lays out work zone areas and places safety signs and devices to protect all members of the crew; performs routine and light maintenance of equipment by cleaning and maintaining paint spray outfits, brushes, stencils, templates, paint truck and other equipment; flushes, cleans, and lubricates all hoses and spray guns; maintains sign inventory and daily records; trains and supervises crews on traffic line and legend painting, installing and maintaining traffic signs and sign posts, and fabricating traffic signs as directed; and performs other related duties as assigned. Maintains regular attendance.
Qualification Guidelines
To quality for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is :
Education and / or Experience :
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and three years of increasingly responsible experience in street maintenance and repair, including highway painting and traffic sign installation.
Knowledge of :
Methods, techniques, materials, and supplies used in traffic painting operations; traffic safety procedures and proper traffic control; and delineation with cones and other safety equipment.
Ability to :
Work carefully and efficiently under hazardous traffic conditions; perform heavy and physically demanding work for lengthy periods of time; operate and maintain a variety of traffic painting equipment, ladders, brooms, shovels, posthole diggers, hand equipment, power tools, and aerial lift devices; paint with proper consistency; apply paint manually or by spray machine to various types of surfaces under varying temperature conditions; and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other City employees.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class "B" California Driver's License are required. Possession of a forklift certificate prior to the completion of the probationary period is required. A Work Zone Safety and Level 1 Signs and Markings Certificate is desirable.
Physical Demands
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, or more than 75 pounds with assistance; operate machinery using arms and legs; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business.
Work Environment
Employee generally works outdoors. Employee may travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and / or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

SELECTION PROCESS :

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six-month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 55 benefit formula underwhich the employee pays 8% of the employee contribution to PERS. The City offers a Section 125 cafeteria benefit plan. The City does not participate in the Social Security System.
