Position Description

Class Title: Maintenance Mechanic - Pools

Grade Number: 9M, $21.61

Department: Parks & Recreation

Union: S.E.I.U.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of tasks repairing and maintaining the city's pools and spray parks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Pool Tradesman (crew leader), Maintenance Supervisor, Chief Maintenance Supervisor, and Park Superintendent.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise supervision over lower class when acting as crew leader.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

" Comprehension of all basic mechanical concepts involved in the functioning of an institutional swimming pool.

" Familiarity with all systems, equipment, and peripherals that are required to contain, circulate, filter, heat, and treat swimming pools.

" Ability to perform preventive maintenance and basic repair on such equipment. In instances of major maintenance or replacement, be able to describe the measure necessary and direct such work.

" Competence in all areas of water chemistry as it pertains to pools, their sanitation, water-clarity maintenance, physical preservation of the facility - to include automation technology.

" Proficiency in all techniques and systems for the assurance of patron and employee safety, including mechanical equipment handling, chemical handling, lifeguard principals, and emergency actions required for the health and well-being of swimmers and other patrons of the pool.

" Works from equipment manuals, specifications, general instructions, and broad knowledge of specialized equipment, maintenance, and repair methods.

" Diagnosis cause of equipment malfunction and institutes repair

" Perform preseason maintenance on all equipment and make ready for upcoming season.

" Make repairs in the field to broken equipment. This may require in water repairs.

" Perform minor burning and welding to maintain or repair equipment and structures

" Prepares parts and materials lists needed to facilitate repairs and maintain inventory needed to maintain equipment.

" Maintain required records on preventive maintenance, repairs, and inventory levels.

" Replaces or repairs process equipment components, such as, valves pipes and flanges.

" Dismantles, replaces, and repairs work or defective parts and components on such equipment as pumps, power units, compressors, chlorinators, chemical feeders, and similar equipment and related controls, gauges, and recorders.

" Reassembles and tests performance of units repaired.

" Performs other duties, including those of other classifications (higher or lower) and standby crews as assigned and/or as conditions warrant. Observes rules and practices on quality of work, personal conduct, and safe, effective and courteous service to the community.

" Performs related work as may be required.

" The position requires work on weekends and holidays, as related to the continued operation of pool water treatment and circulation systems from late May to early September. Depending on the nature of equipment failure and need for timely repairs, the position may require evening and extended hours.

" Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years experience in pool maintenance.
  • Two years experience repairing small equipment such as motors and pumps
  • Equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid PA CDL class B driver's license.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic pool equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits related to small equipment.
  • Knowledge of minor welding, burning, and fabrication is desirable.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must possess physical ability to work under all conditions encountered, including managing heavy parts and working in various physical positions.
  • Ability to obtain either the AFO (Aquatics Facility Operator) or CPO (Certified

Pool Operator) certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Ability to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture pesticide

Applicator license with Category 24 within 6 months of employment.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Daily use of service truck, hand tools, such as wrenches, ratchets, screw drivers, hammers; power tools, such as drills, saws, impact wrenches, grinders; welding and burning equipment. Floor jacks and other related lifting and positioning equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to sit, stand, talk and hear. The employee is required to walk; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to climb up and down ladders. The employee is required to have the ability to swim.

While working with pool filtration, disinfection, and circulation systems, the employee will be required to work in confined spaces, including but not limited to, recirculating gutter and utility chases, closets, or tunnels.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud to loud. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is frequently required. In pool filter rooms, the employee will be working around chemicals with hazardous properties (corrosive, environmental hazards) requiring occasional use of PPE. Also, certain areas of filter rooms may be damp or have seasonable mold, also requiring PPE or increased ventilation.
