Under general supervision of a Public Works Crew Leader, performs skilled work pertaining to the maintenance and construction of City property, facilities, streets, and/or storm drains and related structures; operates and maintains specialized equipment related to assignment; and provides technical support to the Public Works Crew Leader.


**This position is non-exempt.**

Essential job functions & responsibilities

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; fuels and lubricates vehicles and related equipment.
  • Operates City trucks, trailers, and tractors with attachments skillfully and safely; washes and cleans assigned vehicles; uses appropriate safety equipment; inspects vehicles and reports the need for major repair and service.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of construction and maintenance equipment; such as light and heavy trucks, power tools, jackhammers, concrete saws, tampers, rollers, rodding machines, sewer flushers, bobcats, gas and leak detectors, and/or airless spray equipment.
  • Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools.
  • Responds to customer complaints.
  • Responds to emergency situations in off-hours as required; may be required to work overtime and off-hour shifts as needed.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment.
  • Takes initiative to seek out work, is proactive in addressing problems, completes tasks and follows through with work assignments.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • The operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and power equipment.
  • Safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
  • Safe driving rules and practices.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and software applications related to assignment.
  • Written and oral speaking skills.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff. 

Ability to:

  • Perform basic construction, modification, maintenance, and repair work for assigned area.
  • Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.
  • Perform assigned maintenance and repair activities with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in a clean working condition providing for proper security.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Follow department policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
  • Work overtime and off-hour shifts as needed.
  • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Operate City vehicles observing legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Operate office equipment including computers.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications

Combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency; additional specialized course work in public works construction and maintenance or a related field is desirable.
  • One-year experience in buildings and ground maintenance is desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Class C driver's license.

Physical Demands

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in outside areas in all weather conditions, which may include wind, rain and other elements.  Continuous walking, reaching and handling; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.  Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling and crouching; reaching at and above shoulder height; pushing/pulling, twisting at waist; strong power or pinch grasp; upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; pushing/pulling of objects up to 20 pounds.  Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling and fingering of objects and equipment; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds; lifting and pushing/pulling of objects over 100 pounds with assistance only.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
