Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for inspecting the construction of public works and planning projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Inspection work is done on small to medium size projects such as minor streets, drainage systems, sanitary sewers, and sidewalk trenches. Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, high noise areas, dust, and unfavorable fumes and vapors. Exercises no supervision.
Essential Job Functions
- Attends pre-construction meetings with City Staff, engineers, contractors, and utility company representatives to discuss general information about new projects.
- Reviews and interprets project plans and specifications to become acquainted with construction activities.
- Resolves complaints from the general public on construction related activities.
- Coordinates construction or repair activities between contractors and utility companies to avoid conflicts and to ensure a minimum disruption of services.
- Communicates and meets with the general public as well as with City officials regarding sequence of construction.
- Coordinates with other divisions, to clean sewers, set up traffic signs, and barricade road hazards when working around construction sites and schedules material lab testing.
- Ensures that contractor conforms to safety rules and regulations, to include proper shoring trenches in accordance with OSHA rules and regulations.
- Prepares and maintains accurate daily project logs to record job progress and all situations and problems relevant to the projects..
- Ensures that all materials and work by the contractor is in accordance with standard specifications.
- Assists in GIS field work and mapping.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as re required.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Two (2) year of experience in construction, surveying, drafting, or a related field.
- Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles and practices of construction and engineering.
- Knowledge of methods, equipment, costs, and materials used in the construction industry.
- Knowledge of codes, regulations, and ordinances related to the construction industry.
- Knowledge of hazards, safety, and other OSHA regulations related to the construction industry.
- Knowledge of engineering mathematics.
- Skill in utilizing a calculator.
- Ability to interpret plans, blueprints and, specifications.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
- Ability to use independent judgment in making decisions.
- Ability to exercise firmness and tact in dealing with contractors, engineers, etc.
- Ability to interpret and properly apply city codes and regulations.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
- Some ability to interpret and properly apply building codes and regulations (preferred).
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.42 - $22.54 per hour
