What are the responsibilities and job description for the LIBRARIAN I - EARLY LITERACY LIBRARIAN position at City of Amarillo?
ENTRY LEVEL SALARY: $36,430 per year ($17.51 per hour)
Early Literacy Librarians work with the Coordinator of Youth Services and other library staff to plan and implement a variety of literacy programs for youth and families including storytimes, skits, book talks, and other programs that encourage reading and use of the library by young people and their parents. They collaborate with the youth services staff at all branches of the Amarillo Public Library to develop meaningful partnerships with schools, community groups, social service agencies, daycares, and other institutions that work to create and support successful youth and families. Early Literacy Librarians also provide service to patrons seeking assistance with the youth, adult fiction, and media collections on the first floor of Downtown Library. They assist the Coordinator of Youth Services with maintenance of library collections and other tasks as assigned, and they may serve as the Downtown Library building supervisor when needed.

Knowledge
- Understanding of early literacy best practices, child development, and the Family Place Libraries model.
- Broad awareness of children’s and young adult literature, including emerging titles and trends.
- Solid grasp of collection development principles, including selection and weeding of youth materials.
- Familiarity with library catalogs, interlibrary loan processes, and online databases.
Skills
- Proficiency in planning and delivering engaging storytimes, workshops, and family-centered programs.
- Organizational and record-keeping skills for documenting program activities and producing reports.
- Strong outreach and collaboration skills for building relationships with schools, daycares, and others.
- Effective communication and presentation skills for conducting tours, trainings, and public events.
Abilities
- Ability to adapt programs for various age groups and settings while meeting community needs.
- Demonstrated ability to perform reference services, offer readers’ advisory, and create bibliographies.
- Versatility in producing promotional and educational materials for print and digital platforms.
- Flexibility to handle special projects and respond to evolving library service demands.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school is preferred; in lieu of that, a bachelor’s degree with at least two years’ library experience is required. Preference will be given to applicants with early childhood literacy and education experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires evening and some weekend work (one night per week, alternating Fridays and Saturdays, and one Sunday every four weeks). Candidates must be eager to serve the public and be able to work and harmoniously with others. Full performance of duties requires physical stamina. Early Literacy Librarians must walk briskly, stand for considerable periods of time, lift and carry stacks of books weighing up to 20 pounds, and push loaded book trucks for short distances – all of which requires agility in stooping, lifting, and bending.
