What are the responsibilities and job description for the PROCESS CONTROL TECHNICIAN position at City of Amarillo?
SUMMARY
Under minimal supervision, operates and maintains analytical lab performing a variety of chemical, physical, and biological analyses of water, wastewater, storm water, playa lakes, soils, sludge and industrial waste. This position is responsible for using EPA methodology to perform state required testing, collecting and entering data and preparing reports of laboratory results; and maintaining the laboratory supplies, materials and equipment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uses EPA approved methodology to perform laboratory analyses on water, wastewater, storm water, playa lakes, soil, sludge and industrial waste.
- Perform state and federally required proficiency testing of the parameters for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), pH, Chlorine residual, Total Solids, Total Suspended and Dissolved Solids, Ammonia, Total Phosphorus, Cyanide, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), E. Coli, and Nitrite.
- Prepares and maintains media, reagents, stains, and standards for lab and operations analyses.
- Performs routine upkeep and minor maintenance of laboratory equipment including cleaning and replacement of modular components.
- Monitors and maintains all analytical equipment including and not limited to spectrophotometer, ISE meters, pH meters, D.O. meters, drying ovens, furnace, desiccators, centrifuges, EPure, R.O. unit and distillation apparatus.
- Trains and oversees relief operator on lab procedures and assigns work when relief operator is available.
- Remains knowledgeable of and implements safe Lab procedures.
- Maintains lab ware and chemical inventory for laboratory and operations.
- Communicates in-plant analyses results to operations and Operations Control Supervisor for possible adjustments to plant processes.
- Assists Operations Control Supervisor in data entry and records management.
- Assembles vital information for E.P.A. and T.C.E.Q. reporting purposes.
- Uses of city vehicle to deliver samples to city laboratory for analyses not performed at plant.
- Accounts for City property and participates in inventories as required.
- Prepares and processes purchase orders for chemicals and other laboratory supplies.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent (GED) and some college coursework in natural sciences (i.e., Chemistry, Biology) or a Wastewater Operator B license. A degree in Natural Sciences or a related field is preferred. Valid Texas Class ‘C’ Driver’s License required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Proficient in the use of personal computers and peripherals, including but not limited to the use of Microsoft Office and all associated programs.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment including calculators, copiers, and multiline telephone systems.
- Ability to use and maintain components of a water plant and the associated equipment.
- Ability to use and maintain laboratory and related equipment including but not limited to a spectrophotometer, ISE meters, pH meters, D.O. meters, a scientific calculator, drying ovens, furnace, desiccators, centrifuges, EPure, R.O. unit and distillation apparatus.
