REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT SOLID WASTE SUPERINTENDENT
NON-EXEMPT: YES
POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains the solid waste service charges and records of residential customers; compiles refuse locations for mapping and route sheets; handles customer complaints, follow-up inspections and questions; assists in the enforcement of the City’s solid waste regulations and oversees, Big Bulk Pickup, Hand Collection Routes, Curbside Collection, Roll Off Locations, Brush Sites, Alley Clean Up Operations. Performs record keeping; conducts and documents safety training, accident investigations, and property damage claims. Keeps the solid waste charges current and according to City ordinances and departmental policies
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs general supervisory tasks of assigned personnel and collection routes, including schedules, assignments, and solid waste collection activities.
Perform computer operations, adding, deleting, prorating, and determining solid waste account charges of customers.
Setting, removing, or moving refuse containers and confirming with Public Works of new addresses on route or discontinued solid waste services.
Compiles daily reports, takes attendance, reports absences, and must be able to fill out all types of forms used in the collection of solid waste and refuse.
Maintaining routes for addresses and pickup schedules for solid waste containers.
Preparing reports, memos, and letters of correspondence concerning solid waste service.
Maintains good contact with the department head and provides feedback on operations.
Continuously checks on the operation of crews.
Checks on cleanliness of alleys and trash collection areas.
Observed route equipment and containers for proper operation, cleanliness, service maintenance, and repair needs.
Investigate complaints received from the public and employees.
Instructs crews on complaints received, follows up as needed, and observes disposal practices of customers and notes any violations.
Encourages compliance with solid waste regulations and files formal complaints, if necessary.
Investigate and document accidents and property damage.
Conducts and documents safety instructional meetings with personnel.
Must be able to work all hours and fill in other supervisors’ positions as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a good working knowledge of light, medium, and medium-large solid waste collection equipment and trucks.
Must possess computer skills necessary to compose reports, correspondence and must have good telephone etiquette.
Ability to schedule, assign, and oversee equipment operators.
It requires good physical condition and the ability to drive in all types of city traffic and weather conditions.
Requires light to moderate lifting to 50 lbs., medium office exposure, and 24-hour emergency call-out availability
Must be able to integrate with other levels of personnel.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school plus 2 years of personnel supervision and/or computer operation/data entry, bookkeeping, or accounting experience is required. Must have a valid Commercial Texas Driver's License. Regular and punctual attendance is required for this job. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with co-workers.
