Introduction / Overview
The City of American Canyon welcomes applications from energetic, responsible individuals to serve as Lifeguards.
Lifeguards observe the activity of swimmers in and around the American Canyon community pool and must have the ability to make appropriate decisions and act quickly, provide lifesaving services as needed. Lifeguards also teach swim lessons and assist with other pool-related activities.
Under general supervision, assures adherence to policies and rules of the American Canyon Aquatics Center and provides lifesaving services as needed. This is a temporary, part-time position that is scheduled during hours that may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays. Lifeguards can work up to 980 hours per fiscal year.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERTICS
These classes report to a Recreation Coordinator, or other designated staff, and provide assistance in supervising volunteer staff and part-time pool support staff. The Lifeguard is distinguished from the Lifeguard (WSI) in that the latter must possess a Water Safety Instructor Certification and has overall responsibilities for swimming lessons.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Monitor swimming and other pool activities to prevent accidents.
Explain and enforce pool safety rules and regulations to facility users.
Maintain individual and group discipline in and around the pool areas.
Assist in identifying and correcting hazardous conditions and unsafe practices.
Rescue swimmers in distress and administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques when necessary.
Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepare written reports of these activities.
Assist in implementing emergency procedures.
Provide swimming instruction.
Recommend any necessary maintenance of the facility, equipment, or materials.
Perform pool and facility maintenance as assigned.
Convey citizen concerns to supervisor.
Maintain good public relations.
Recommend fees and charges.
Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
Perform cashiering duties.
Install pool covers and lane lines as needed.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of :
Lifesaving procedures, emergency procedures, and first aid and CPR techniques.
Ability to :
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and co- workers.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Make appropriate decisions and act quickly in emergences.
Provides lifesaving services.
Prepare simple reports and records and supervisor groups of swimmers.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience : None
State law requires Lifeguards to be 15 years of age or older.
Supplemental Information
Certificate Requirement :
Applicants may apply, be interviewed and hired even if they do not have a lifeguard certification. The Parks and Recreation Department will host lifeguard classes in February, March and April where participants can earn the necessary certificates. If hired without certificates, these applicants will receive a conditional job offer requiring them to complete the training course before they can start work.
FOR WSI Lifeguard : All of the above -AND- a current Water Safety Instructor Certification License Requirement :
Driver's License : An ability to reliably arrive at the assigned work location without assistance from the City is required. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is desirable.
Safety-Sensitive Position :
Lifeguard is considered a safety-sensitive position, which means applicants who are offered jobs will need to pass a drug test and criminal background check prior to starting work. In addition, applicants offered jobs will need to provide a TB Certificate (less than 2 years old) and submit a valid work permit (if 18 years old or less and required to attend school).
Physical Requirements :
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis. ( 1) Mobility : frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent bending and squatting. (2) Lifting : frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds. (3) Vision : constant use of overall vision. (4) Dexterity : frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. (5) Hearing / Talking : frequent hearing and talking in person. (6) Emotional / Psychological : frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. (7) Environmental : frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances.
Other Requirements :
Some positions may require evening, weekend, or other shift work.
Temporary Part-time employees are entitled to 40 hours of sick leave per calendar year.
No other paid time off, including holidays, is offered.
