What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adult Softball Umpire position at City of Ames?
The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is seeking applications for Adult Softball Umpires. Candidates interested in this opportunity can expect to work 4-16 hours per week with games occurring Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, April - July 2025, with an opportunity to extend employment through the fall season.
Adult Softball Umpires are paid $24.60 - 26.10 per game. Games are approximately one hour in duration.
Adult Softball Umpires are directly accountable to the Site Supervisor and the Recreation Manager, and adjunctly accountable to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation.
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

- Ensure that all playing environments are safe.
- Enforce all procedures and rules in place at all facilities/locations.
- Start games and make calls during game play.
- Provide preventive officiating when necessary.
- Take appropriate actions to keep the environment fun and enjoyable for all parties.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Previous experience is preferred.
- Must obtain ASA certification by the first game.
- Knowledge of the sport and rules.
- Skill in being organized, dependable, and reliable.
- Ability to communicate with adults effectively.
- Ability to provide a confident and positive attitude.
- Ability to understand, appreciate and embody the City of Ames Core Values.
- Ability to maintain an exceptional level of safety.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance (staff shirt w/ appropriate athletic shorts or pants, officials striped shirt, or ASA clothing/equipment) at all times while on site.
