SUMMARY
Coordinates the activities of detectives investigating crimes against persons, property, and/or society, looking for clues and evidence that leads to the arrest and conviction of guilty parties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Responds to crime scenes and leads complex investigations.
- Orders detention of persons in the vicinity of crime for questioning.
- Directs photographs of the position of the body and other evidence.
- Directs supporting officers and detectives in search of clues at the crime scene.
- Questions witnesses and suspects.
- Prepares and submits accurate, timely reports.
- Works assigned cases; assists in all major cases as needed.
- Review paperwork and evidence before submission to the District Attorney's Office.
- Works patrol duties when needed.
- Performs related duties as assigned and required.
Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
The preferred way to obtain the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this position's essential duties and responsibilities are listed below. The city reserves the right to allow substitutions if a candidate or incumbent exceeds requirements in one area but may be deficient in another.
Education and Experience
- Successful completion of a Texas-certified law enforcement academy
- Associate degree from a two-year college is preferred
- Two or more years of officer-level experience may be waived based on the department's needs and with approval by the Chief of Police.
Special Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Texas Class "C" Driver's License in good standing and must be able to maintain
- Intermediate Peace Officer Certification or Basic (with experience) from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
