LATERAL POLICE OFFICER - Must be currently employed as a Full-Time Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff in the State of California continuously for at least one year.
Under general supervision, a Police Officer protects persons and property, provides law enforcement, maintains order, controls traffic, prevents crime and juvenile delinquency, conducts investigations, handles jail and desk duties; performs related duties as required.
Positions in this class are occupied by sworn police officers. Officers may be armed and may be assigned to work in uniform or plain clothes. Shift schedules may be changed periodically and job assignments may be rotated among patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation and administrative services. The duties require initiative, resourcefulness, analytical skills and the ability to adopt a quick, effective and responsible course of action in emergencies. The work involves frequent contact with the public, often in situations where relations may be strained.
Examples of Duties
- Patrols an assigned area by car, motorcycle, or foot to observe, investigate, and report suspicious and hazardous conditions.
- Apprehends and arrests law violators.
- Responds to routine and emergency calls for protection of persons and property, and for the enforcement of City ordinances and State laws.
- Investigates crimes, accidents, deaths and disturbances; gathers evidence; interviews, questions and takes statements from complainants, suspects and witnesses; completes case reports.
- Takes charge of juveniles and delinquents and works on cases involving unfit homes and crimes committed against or by juveniles.
- Handles missing persons' cases and works with community organizations and governmental agencies in delinquencies and delinquency control programs.
- Directs traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow at times of emergency or congestion; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws and issues citations.
- Appears in court to present evidence and testimony.
- Searches, guards, transports and assists in the booking and custodial care of prisoners.
- Serves writs, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents.
- May be assigned to assist in conducting special studies related to the Police Department.
- May be assigned to evidence, training, investigations or other administrative assignments.
- Provides information and direction to the public and assists in developing community crime prevention programs.
- May speak before business, school, civic and social groups.

Graduation from high school or equivalent and must have completed a P.O.S.T. approved academy at time of appointment.
License or Certificate :
A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License and a satisfactory driving record are a condition of hire. A satisfactory driving record is one absent of misdemeanor convictions or multiple infraction convictions. Loss of a driver's license and / or an unsatisfactory driving record may result in employee discipline, up to and including termination.
Criminal Record :
Officers shall not have been convicted of any felony. A misdemeanor conviction may result in applicant disqualification and employee disciplinary action, up to and including termination. A complete background investigation will be conducted.
Age : 2l years at time of appointment.

LATERAL SIGNING BONUS / INCENTIVE
To qualify for the bonus / incentives, the applicant must :
1. Be currently employed as a police officer within a California law enforcement agency.
2. Have two (2) years of experience and have successfully completed a probationary period.
3. Possess a Basic California POST Certificate.
4. If the applicant is a former Antioch officer who wishes to return to the department, his / her separation of employment must be at least eighteen (18) months to qualify.
The bonus / incentives will consist of the following :
1. Applicant will be allowed to carry over up to 200 hours of accrued sick leave from his / her department.
2. Prior law enforcement service seniority will be used to determine vacation accrual rate of the applicant.
3. Automatic credit of 40 hours vacation upon employment.
4. Signing bonus of $30,000 with payments in the following increments :
a. $15,000 - upon successful completion of FTO
b. $2,500 - upon successful completion of probation
c. $5,000 - upon three (3) years of service
d. $2,500 - upon four (4) years of service
e. $5,000 - upon five (5) years of service
5. Any current Antioch employee who recruits a lateral officer will receive his / her choice of $1,000 or 20 hours of Comp Time upon the lateral's successful completion of the field training program.

BENEFITS :
800 per year reimbursement for books, tuition and mileage.
2.5% / month for Intermediate Post Certificate / AA Degree
5% / month for Advanced Post Certificate / BA / BS Degree.
2.5% of base monthly pay beginning the 108-167 month
5.0% of base monthly pay beginning the 168-227 month
7.0% of base monthly pay beginning the 228 month
