The City of Antioch is currently accepting applications for the Equipment Operator position located within the Public Works Department. The Public Works Department provides maintenance service to Antioch’s roads, parks, marina, open spaces, flood control areas, water and sewer lines as well as providing safe potable water to residents. The Street Maintenance crews are responsible for general maintenance and repair of City streets and signs; including hazardous conditions, potholes, right-of-ways and city owned parking lots. Crews remove illegally dumped trash and debris; respond to emergencies such as vehicle accidents and flooding; eradicate weeds along city-maintained roadways; respond to after hour calls for service; remove graffiti, install new and maintain existing roadway signs and road markings.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, operates and maintains a variety of complex motorized light and heavy construction equipment used in the construction and maintenance of street, water distribution, wastewater collection, and other related structures and systems; performs excavating, grading, trenching, loading, and related operations according to required standards; performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual work; trains others in the use of equipment; ensures adherence to safe work procedures and practices; and may serve as a crew leader.The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Operate light and heavy construction equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, spreaders, graders, motor rollers, dump trucks, and equipment involved in the maintenance, repair, and inspection of street, water distribution, wastewater collection, and other related structures and systems; secures equipment upon completion of work.
- Operate earth moving equipment to move dirt, rocks, sand, concrete, asphalt, or other materials; operate a backhoe to excavate trenches, place piping, and backfill; dump materials into truck.
- Excavate around buried utilities including water, sewer and gas lines, high-pressure lines and fiber optics.
- Pave City streets and roads using a paver; roll and compact asphalt.
- Maintain the safe working condition of all equipment used; perform minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs; perform pre-trip vehicle inspections; service and lubricate equipment as necessary.
- Transport equipment and material to work sites; load and unload equipment and materials.
- Check job sites for potential hazards; determine precautions for safe equipment operation.
- Assemble and set up appropriate barricades and signs at work sites; perform traffic control and install shoring equipment as needed.
- Perform the full range of duties involved in the maintenance, repair, and construction of various structures and systems including in the areas of street, water distribution, wastewater collection and/or related structures and systems when not assigned to equipment operations.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools in assigned construction and maintenance area.
- Train new employees on operation of construction equipment; provide instruction on the techniques of equipment operation.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
- Read and interpret a variety of drawings, sketches, and blueprints for assigned project areas.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of basic records and reports.
- May act as crew leader as assigned.
- Respond to emergency situations in off-hours as necessary.
- Perform related duties as required.

- Perform servicing and minor repairs on equipment.
- Make minor field adjustments to assigned equipment.
- Attach auxiliary pieces of equipment to power driven equipment.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
- One (1) year of experience operating and maintaining a variety of complex motorized light and heavy construction equipment used in the construction and maintenance of street, water distribution, wastewater collection, and other related structures and systems. Types of equipment includes but is not limited to backhoes, front end loaders, rollers and paving machines.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license.
- Possession of a California Commercial Class A driver's license with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Possession of a Traffic Control Certificate within six (6) months of appointment.
