What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic position at City of Apache Junction?

Positions assigned to this class perform a variety of maintenance and repair activities in the Vehicle Maintenance Division on automotive, heavy and light construction and other power equipment belonging to the City.The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City’s needs.- Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties on City automobiles and a variety of gasoline and diesel powered maintenance and construction equipment; repair broken components and replace faulty parts.
- Conduct price comparisons and prepare documents to obtain purchase orders; communicate with vendors to arrange services and order supplies.
- Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for automotive and heavy equipment.
- Replace or repair faulty parts on police motorcycles other city fleet vehicles including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.
- May perform repairs on special project equipment and vehicles such as armored cars and SWAT vehicles.
- Enter related vehicle and equipment information into work management software.
- Create and maintain a safe work environment; alert others to any dangerous situations.
- Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and two (2) years paid fulltime experience as a skilled mechanic in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline and/or diesel powered vehicles; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess an Arizona Commercial Driver’s License.Knowledge
- City and Department procedures, policies and guidelines; procurement rules.
- Arizona Department of Transportation and Federal Highway regulations.
- Automotive repair including but not limited to electrical, hydraulic and fuel systems.
- Injury prevention, safety standards and proper procedure to follow after an employee injury or accident.
Skills
- Welding and fabrication.
- Operating various power tools and shop tools with the use of proper safety equipment and techniques.
- Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and demands to meet deadlines, presenting a professional demeanor while working in stressful situations.
Pre-employment Requirements
Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet the transportation needs of the position. Must provide own hand tools such as one-inch sized wrenches and sockets.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work includes walking, standing, lifting carrying objects between up to 50 to 100 pounds, repeated bending, stooping and reaching above the head daily. Performs functions requiring visual and manual dexterity, precision measurements and continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement. Requires operation of a vehicle.
