What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Maintenance Worker Specialist position at City of Apache Junction?

Positions assigned to this class perform a wide variety of maintenance, construction, and repair work; operates all heavy-duty construction equipment and vehicles at assigned job sites.
Depending on assignment:Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and three (3) years paid full-time experience in street maintenance, equipment operation or construction, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess an Arizona Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement at appointment.
Pre-employment Requirements
Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet the transportation needs of the position.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors and includes walking and operation of a vehicle and heavy-duty equipment. Requires moderate exertion and lifting carrying objects between 20 and 50 pounds, repeated bending, stooping and reaching above the head daily. Performs construction and maintenance functions requiring visual and manual dexterity and precision measurements and continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement. May be exposed to high voltage and hazardous chemicals. May be required to work overtime or extended hours during emergency situations.

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may no change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City's needs.
- Shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base or other street surface materials used in patching, repairing and reconstructing streets; read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
- Assist in painting and striping city streets and curbs; install pavement markers.
- Clean up debris from parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, streets and storm drains; manage plant growth in and near roadways and medians; inspect and clear obstructions from roadways and storm drains; perform work in emergency situations as required.
- Operate basic construction equipment such as hand tools and power tools and heavy-duty machinery and equipment including but not limited to backhoe, crack seal machine, and trencher.
- Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; pour and assist in finishing concrete and masonry work; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
- Place street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and controls traffic around work sites; utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed; create and maintain a safe work environment; alert others to any dangerous situations.
- May act as lead when the job lead or crew leader is not present at the job site; responsible for the completion of work.
- Create and maintain a safe work environment; alert others to unsafe working conditions.
- Support the city’s policies, goals, and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Depending on assignment:
- May maintain inventory and cleanliness of all signs in stock; ensure sufficient inventory of required materials; make routine purchases as needed.
- May produce visual communication material for special events.

- May prepare and design layout and fabrication of city signs, logos, and insignias. Cut out sign blanks; prime and prepare surfaces for lettering. Apply decal insignias and graphics.
- May install and maintain all city traffic and street signs including installation of signposts, pavement markers, and pour concrete for the installation of street signposts.
Depending on assignment:
- Must possess an Arizona DOT approved flagger certification and Work Zone certification within (1) year of appointment depending on assignment.
- Must possess an IMSA Signs and Markings Level I certification at appointment depending on assignment.
- Must possess an IMSA Signs and Markings Level II certification within 1 year of appointment depending on assignment.
Knowledge
- City and Department procedures, policies and guidelines; City Code.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) laws, regulations and standards, National Incident
- Management System (NIMS) procedures, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
- General tasks in various trades such as carpentry, masonry and construction; heavy equipment operation.
- Injury prevention, safety standards and proper procedure to follow after an employee injury or accident.
- Operating various types of hand tools construction tools and equipment including but not limited to Gannon loader tractor, dump truck, sweeper, roller, jackhammer, and striping truck, using proper safety gear and precautions when handling equipment.
- Reading and interpreting basic maps, blueprints, and blue staking markers/indicators.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with contractors, coworkers, and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely; following instructions.
