GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position works under the direction of the Fire Marshal. The purpose of the position is to perform professional, administrative, and investigative work involving the Fire Department's fire inspection section and plan review. The employee will function independently and is responsible for performing fire inspections of private and commercial buildings, reviewing and evaluating construction plans, fire protection systems, and building designs to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local Fire and Life Safety Codes and Regulations. Employee works in accordance with directives received from the Fire Marshal. This position requires continuous contact with citizens, vendors, and employees throughout the city. Fire safety inspections are conducted on all new and existing commercial properties. Fire safety inspections aim to enforce adopted fire codes for all commercial properties and identify and remedy unsafe, hazardous, and / or non-compliant conditions. Annual fire safety inspections are also required to be conducted for the re-licensing process of state-run / approved childcare and adult care facilities outlined within the Florida Administrative Code, 69A.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

- Reports to and is responsible to the Fire Marshal, and provides supervisory and technical assistance to the employees assigned in the Fire Prevention and Inspection Practices.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cooperative and effectively with employees, related agencies and the general public.
- Shall demonstrate a great deal of discretion and independent judgment in the performance of duties.
- Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional and timely manner and within limits established by the department.
- Apply common sense along with known practices to achieve goals.
- Work closely with all divisions within the department to provide for the highest degree of efficiency and accuracy.
- Continually maintain, develop and implement industry Best Practices in regard to Fire Prevention Practices.
- Recommend and assist with the development of codes and ordinances.
- Research and locate needed information to deal with code applications and violations.
- Maintains records of inspections and plans review.
- Attend training courses, seminars, and meetings to maintain knowledge and learn new trends in the field.
- Develop, implement, enforce policies of the department and within the division.
- Performs various other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.
JOB LOCATION
City of Apopka fire stations, occasional driving to seminars, conferences, and meetings. Travels to all City owned locations where equipment is used or stored.
