What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Intern position at City of Apple Valley?
Responsible for assisting with the administration of construction activities associated with Public Works infrastructure projects under the supervision of the City Engineer and Engineering Technician. Performs data collection, construction observation, material testing and public information duties during the construction phase for street and utility improvement projects.
Position requires ability to work outdoors during adverse weather conditions as directed in temperatures ranging from -10F to 100F.
Position workload may be such that, during some periods of time, activities will be hectic and stressful, and a variety of different tasks will be performed at a fast pace.
- Performs or assists with construction observation on Public Works infrastructure projects to ensure that construction is consistent with project specifications, plans, and codes. Projects include installation of streets, water mains, sanitary sewers, storm drainage systems, sidewalks, trails, pump stations, and water resources infrastructure.
- Performs or coordinates testing of soils and materials used in public construction projects and oversees tests performed by contractors for conformance to specifications.
- Performs necessary measurements and maintains complete records for contract payments and accurate as-built drawings.
- Acts as liaison to contractor and the public to provide information and solve problems.
- Communicates with property owners about construction projects and keeps them informed of the status of projects. Answers questions about schedules and potential impacts to property.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Currently enrolled in a degree program in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, directly, honestly, respectfully and in a professional manner with all employees, the general public and elected officials.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Ability to perform physical tasks encountered during inspections at construction sites, including climbing ladders and walking over rugged terrain. Regularly required to use hands, feel or operate objects, use tools and keyboards, drive a vehicle, crawl inside manholes, and climb to heights or depths of twenty feet. Must frequently move, turn, lift and carry objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
- Three (3) months experience with construction related work preferred.

Two intern positions available.
Reports to City Engineer and/or Engineering Technician.
Schedule Monday-Friday days and occasional Saturdays. Seasonal; 6 months maximum.
Offer of employment is contingent on successful completion of background check, including criminal and driving record.
