What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Mechanic position at City of Apple Valley?
Responsible for assisting the Public Works Supervisor and Working Foreman - Fleet with the day-to-day operations of the fleet maintenance division; and performing tasks of the Working Foreman - Fleet in his/her absence. Duties include but are not limited to: performing all levels of mechanical, diagnostic and inspection work on automobiles, squad cars, medium and heavy duty/light equipment, heavy duty trucks and other City-owned vehicles and equipment. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies. Shift may be changed with 7 days notice. |
- Diagnoses and performs necessary repairs on vehicles and motorized equipment. Performs preventive and routine maintenance on all City vehicles.
- Performs diagnostic analysis and mechanical repairs on all vehicle systems, including but not limited to electrical, hydraulic, transmission, air conditioning, emissions, heating, fuel and mechanical systems.
- Designs and implements minor modifications to existing equipment through fabrication and welding skills, as directed.
- Maintains maintenance and repair records on all City-owned vehicles and equipment through the use of a fleet management system.
- Conducts and assists in training other employees, including but not limited to: training employees on proper equipment operation, training employees on repairs and maintenance of equipment; and training employees on proper procedures in the completion of assigned tasks.
- Assists the Public Works Supervisor and Working Foreman - Fleet, as directed, in overseeing work projects, crew, and assuring proper task completion.
- Performs the duties of the Working Foreman - Fleet in his/her absence.
- Utilizes technology applicable to the field and/or general operations and implements available technology to accomplish work tasks.
- Assures compliance with all appropriate safety rules and regulations, including but not limited to: OSHA standards, City safety standards, and all other applicable safety regulations.
- Assists all maintenance divisions and other departments, as directed, in the required maintenance of City-owned properties.
- Occasionally or as needed, performs snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, and salting.
- Performs other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position as assigned by the City.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two years of full-time mechanic experience, or five years of part-time mechanic experience.
- Certified to complete DOT inspections within 12 months of appointment.
- Possess ASE Certification or become certified within 12 months of appointment.
- Valid and unrestricted driver's license and excellent driving record.
- Possess or be able to obtain and maintain Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 12 months of appointment.
- Working knowledge of appropriate safety regulations and demonstrated ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
- Must be able to comply with federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree or completion of technical training program in a mechanically related field.
- Experience on diesel and heavy equipment or electronic vehicle systems.
- Experience on heavy duty trucks.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed primarily at maintenance facilities. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies
- Physical activities include bending, twisting, gripping, carrying, and shoveling.
- Ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to carry and operate various types of equipment.
- Some tasks require work in confined spaces and use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, harnesses, and related equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather.
