Assists with work related to maintenance of streets, boulevards, parking lots, other public accesses, storm drainage system, boulevard trees, and the City cemetery. Duties include but are not limited to field maintenance tasks, equipment operation, equipment repair, and responding to customer requests. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control and other emergencies.
  1. Performs all tasks, functions, and duties assigned to the streets maintenance division, including but not limited to: manual labor; and routine equipment operation and maintenance.
  2. Performs manual tasks and routine equipment operation for the maintenance of gravel and/or paved surfaces, including but not limited to: clearing and grubbing sites; placing and compacting fill materials; placing and compacting bituminous surfaces; and pouring/finishing concrete.
  3. Performs manual tasks and routine equipment operation for the maintenance of streets, parking lots and other public accesses, including but not limited to: sweeping and/or washing, preparing surfaces for repairs; installing and repairing signs and barricades; crack sealing; sealcoating; blacktop patching; and sandbagging.
  4. Performs inspections, maintenance and repair of storm drainage system components and ponds, including but not limited to: clearing outlets, removing sediment from ponds, removing sediment from storm sewer structures, clearing and stabilizing pond slopes.
  5. Performs snow and ice control for the City including but not limited to: operating snowplow equipment (plow truck, loader, and small equipment); and applying deicing chemicals.
  6. Performs maintenance functions of all public sites including but not limited to: boulevard mowing and repair; litter removal; sign and barricade installation, removal and repair; weed control; tree planting, pruning, and removal; and landscape maintenance.
  7. Performs manual tasks and routine equipment operation for the maintenance of the City cemetery including but not limited to: dirt work and seeding, planting and watering trees and plants, leveling markers, picking up litter and unauthorized items, constructing feature areas, preparing for and attending burials, and responding to customer requests.
  8. Performs repairs of a routine nature to equipment, including but not limited to: welding; changing oil and lubricating; and other routine maintenance.
  9. Utilizes technology applicable to the field and/or general operations and implements available technology to accomplish work tasks.
  10. Adheres to all safety rules and regulations; follows safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
  11. Assists all maintenance divisions and other departments, as directed, in the required maintenance of City-owned properties.
  12. Performs other duties consistent with the tasks of the position as assigned by the City.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid MN driver's license and excellent driving record.
  • Class B Minnesota driver's license or ability to obtain and maintain within 12 months of appointment.
  • Ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
  • Requires compliance with Department of Transportation drug/alcohol testing requirements.
  • Additional Minimum Requirements for Maintenance Worker II: 
    - 18 months of experience working in a municipal streets maintenance division, or related experience as determined by the City.
    - Class A driver’s license.
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Class A Minnesota driver's license
  • Experience in maintenance and operation of equipment, vehicles, and machinery.
  • Experience in construction or municipal streets operation.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed primarily at project sites.
  • Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, on-call duty, snow and ice control and other emergencies.
  • Primary job functions require ability to perform physical activities including bending, twisting, gripping, carrying, and shoveling; lifting of up to 50 lbs.; working in confined spaces; use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, harnesses, and related equipment; ability to work outdoors in extreme weather.

Reports to: Public Works Supervisor – Streets.

Pay Rate: In Accordance with AFSCME Labor Agreement.  Maintenance Worker I: $26.75 - $35.85 per hour; Maintenance Worker II: $30.15 - $39.25 per hour.  Plus group benefits package.  Starting position (I or II) and pay rate dependent on qualifications.

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Must be available for on call duty, extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies.

Union:  Position is represented by AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employes) and subject to the collective bargaining agreement.

Other: Offers of employment are contingent on successful result of background investigation, physical exam and agility test, and drug screen.
