What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician position at City of Appleton?
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Works as a survey field crew member or crew chief employing such tools as levels, level rods, GPS total stations, prism poles and data collectors.
- Provides inspection of complex engineering construction projects.
- Performs GIS mapping/record keeping assignments.
- Mentors other Engineering Technicians
- Maintains equipment, vehicles, and supplies.
- Sets stakes for line and grade.
- Makes accurate field measurements and information for payment and record keeping purposes.
- Field locates existing City infrastructure using GIS software.
- Responds to emergency call-ins related to locating City infrastructure through a rotating on-call system.
- Performs routine arithmetic computations.
- Ensures compliance with City and State specifications.
- Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Evaluates existing pavement and underground utility conditions.
- Locates survey monuments and removes brush for survey lines.
- Converts construction plans to record drawings.
- Performs other work tasks as assigned.
An Associate Degree in Engineering, or a related field, with 4 years of experience in survey, inspection, and/or GIS mapping/record keeping preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
- Advanced knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, procedures, and methods of public works construction.
- Knowledge of mathematical procedures and the ability to perform engineering calculations accurately.
- Ability to read, interpret and understand construction plans and specifications.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to work and make decisions under limited supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Ability to keep detailed records of contract work performed.
- Skill in the operation of computer equipment and software, including AutoCAD, ArcMap, and Microsoft applications.
- Advanced skill in the operation and maintenance of survey, inspection and mapping equipment and software.
- Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures.
- Ability to perform tasks on a regular basis, which require frequent standing, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, squatting, and carrying.
- Valid driver's license, good driving record and the ability to drive a car or light truck.
- Thorough knowledge of precautions necessary to work safely in and around vehicular traffic.
- Ability to monitor work site safety in accordance with the City of Appleton Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.
