The Library Assistant – Children’s (Sub) is a non-benefited position. Work involves providing reference and readers advisory to patrons at the Children's Service desk as well as instructing the public in the use of electronic and print resources and working as a member of a public service team. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Children's Services supervisor. This position will work an average of 5-10 hours per week. Weekend availability is required.Essential Job Functions
- Conducts reference interviews
- Provides reference and readers advisory to patrons at public service desks in person and via the telephone, email or correspondence
- Instructs patrons in the use of electronic and print resources
- Promotes library programs and services
Other Job Functions
- Assists patrons with all equipment in the library, including simple troubleshooting
- Issues new and replacement library cards
- Assists patrons in paying fines using the Jamex or Infosoup
- Assists patrons with checking out material at the self-check machines or at the service desk
- Completes short-term projects as assigned
- Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of the public library function
- Knowledge of library services for children in public libraries
- Ability to provide reference and reader's advisory services to the public, in person and via telephone, e-mail or written communication
- Ability to instruct varied age groups in using electronic and print resources for information gathering
- Familiarity with Windows, MS Office, Outlook email and Internet Search Engines
- Strong knowledge of children's literature
- Genuine respect for children and their families
- Strong oral and written communication
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public and to deal with public relations problems courteously and tactfully
- Ability to work independently with creativity
- Must be able to bend in all directions, lift and lower items weighing up to 5 pounds, reach above the head
- Fluency in Spanish or Hmong languages is not required, but is preferred
