ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Operates a large variety of equipment, including all classes of dump trucks, loaders, grader, backhoe, asphalt paver, skid steer, patch machines, crack filler, router, compressor, rollers, flushers, snow plows with wing, Vac trucks, utility tractors and performs associated work tasks.
• Pours and finishes concrete pavement, curb, sidewalks and driveways.
• Establishes line and grade, sets forms, inlets and manhole structures to line and grade.
• Operates backhoe or other equipment for the removal of inlets, manholes, curb, pavement and other concrete as needed.
• Coordinates hauling of concrete removal, asphalt paving and base course grading operation.
• Sets and finishes all concrete projects.
• Informs homeowners and businesses of concerns; takes and acts upon comments or complaints from public.
• Plows and hauls snow.
• Salts streets and sidewalks.
• Performs site grading and paves streets.
• Performs street patching and repairing.
• Grinds brush and yard waste material.
• Hauls gravel, leaves, snow sand, etc. to and from work site or designated area.
• Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works other shifts, overtime and extra hours as required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
• Operates as an inspector when necessary.
• Excavates sewer and water trenches as needed.
• Leads, guides and trains other team members.
• Performs miscellaneous painting, sand blasting and other maintenance tasks.
• Performs minor equipment maintenance, cleaning, and repair.
• Assists other divisions and performs all duties of Operator, Operator I & II.
Requires considerable experience in street maintenance, operation of heavy equipment and training beyond the high school level in the asphalt, concrete and construction trades; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
• Considerable knowledge of the operation of vehicles and heavy equipment.
• knowledge in the excavation, forming and finishing work necessary in the construction of concrete formations.
• Thorough knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely in and around vehicular traffic.
• Knowledge of pipe laying and plumbing techniques.
• Knowledge in the types and uses of common hand tools.
• Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.
• Ability to lift and operate equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to decipher plat maps, paving plans and execute correct measures for accurate installations and record keeping.
• Skill in the operation of computer equipment, including GIS and Microsoft applications.
• Ability to read and understand street maps and directions.
• Ability to perform minor equipment repairs.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.
• Ability to work and make decisions under limited supervision.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures.
• Ability to oversee the work of other employees who may be assigned to assist in the paving and/or mason work.
• Ability to read and interpret plans.
• Ability to perform tasks on a regular basis, which require frequent standing, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, squatting and carrying.
• Ability to properly barricade work sites in accordance with the City of Appleton Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.
• Ability to wear a respirator.
• Required to respond for emergency operations.
• Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the N endorsement.
