The City of Arroyo Grande is currently filling two (2) vacancies for Maintenance Worker I:
- One (1) vacancy in the Utilities Division; and 
- One (1) vacancy at Soto Sports Complex


SEIU positions receive a 3.5% salary increase effective July 4, 2025. Per MOU side letter with SEIU, Employees shall be flexed to Maintenance Worker II after one (1) year of service as a Maintenance Worker I, contingent upon satisfactory performance. 

JOB DESCRIPTION:
To perform a variety of maintenance and construction work on various facilities and structures within an assigned area or department including but not limited to construction, repair and maintenance of parks, buildings, streets, sewage collection systems or water distribution systems; to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: 
Receives immediate supervision from higher level supervisory staff.
Essential Functions:
  1. Perform or lead the work of an assigned crew in the performance of a variety of maintenance and construction work on various facilities and structures within an assigned area or department including but not limited to construction, repair and maintenance of parks, buildings, streets, sewage collection systems or water distribution systems.
  2. Operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and power and hand tools including but not limited to trucks, rollers, loaders, back hoes, jack hammers and graders.
  3. Clean and perform minor maintenance work on equipment, buildings and facilities within an assigned area; clean and maintain all maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools.
  4. Train assigned work crews in their areas of work in maintenance methods, techniques and in the set up and use of equipment.
  5. Perform street maintenance duties including paving and patching roads; repair and replace damaged sidewalks; repair and replace street signs as required.
  6. Prepare surfaces for paving by removing loose materials, hand sweeping and tack coating; mix cement; break up paved surfaces.
  7. Perform template painting of traffic regulator signs, symbols, zone and other street markings; repair and replace guard rails as needed.
  8. Install, maintain and repair water and sewer mains and lines; service connections, wells, pumps and other water distribution facilities.
  9. Install, clean, flush and repair sewer lines and manholes; repair and maintain sewer lift stations and pumps; clean basins and storm drains.
  10. Perform a variety of parks grounds keeping duties including trimming trees and shrubs, removing tree stumps and roots and planting trees.
  11. Mow, edge, trim and clean all parks grounds areas; remove litter and trash from parks grounds; clean and maintain parks restroom facilities.
  12. Complete maintenance work orders and keep track of all materials used during a job.
  13. Assist in the installation, design, testing and repair of irrigation systems in City parks.
  14. Repair and rebuild equipment in parks facilities and play grounds as needed.
  15. Perform building maintenance duties in assigned facilities; clean, vacuum and buff floors; clean restrooms.
  16. Maintain inventory of maintenance parts and supplies.
Marginal Functions:
  1. May perform minor maintenance work on equipment, buildings and facilities.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
Basic maintenance and construction materials, methods and terminology.
Basic methods and techniques of parks, street, water and sewer system maintenance and repair.
Basic methods and techniques of grounds keeping.
Use of basic hand and power tools.
Ability to:
Participate in maintenance work for an assigned area of the City.
Learn to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.
Learn operational characteristics of water and sewer systems.
Learn occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Learn to install, maintain and repair water and sewer mains and lines.
Learn to pave roads and repair damaged sidewalks.
Learn pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Clean and maintain parks facilities.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: 
No prior experience is required; zero to one year of general maintenance or construction experience is desirable.
Training: 
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid commercial driver's license.

Environmental Conditions: 
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; radiant energy; potentially hazardous chemicals; moving objects/vehicles; inclement weather conditions; work in or with water; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; work or inspect underground; work around heavy construction equipment.
Physical Conditions: 
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting and carrying; pulling, pushing, reaching; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.

Salary : $48,136 - $58,510
