What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Inspector I position at City of Asheville?
The City of Asheville's Water Resources Department is seeking to fill the position of Water Construction Inspector. The purpose of this position is to perform complex technical work in the inspection of construction work to determine compliance with applicable codes and standards. Work involves the inspection of phases of construction sites to ensure adherence to codes and ordinances. Employee is required to exercise independent judgment in applying these standards to a variety of work situations. Work requires that the employee exercise considerable tact and firmness in dealing with contractors, property owners and the general public. Work is performed under limited supervision of the Project Engineer or Engineering Services Manager and is evaluated on the basis of the employee's ability to apply technical knowledge and skills in maintaining prescribed inspection standards.
What you'll be doing:
- Inspects construction sites and projects for compliance with approved plans, specifications, ordinances, code requirements, proper permits and safety practices.
- Specifically inspects installation of water lines, meter pits, booster pump stations, storage tanks and all other drinking water related infrastructure for compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
- Reviews proposed material submittals for adherence to system requirements. Checks and tests materials in field for compliance
- Coordinates and observes pressure testing, bacteriological sample collections and other testing to ensure compliance with standards.
- Examines as-built drawings, easement plats and other documents for correct depiction and description of water and sewer systems, streets, and other related construction site infrastructure.
- Assists with reviews and approvals of plans for construction and alterations.
- Performs warranty inspections and investigates infrastructure failure.
- Prepares a variety of records, reports and enters data into computer files. Maintains comprehensive files, records and reports on inspections and project sites.
- Confers with other inspectors and the supervisor on questions of departmental policies and other inspection problems; confers with state officials during review of programs.
- Confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others regarding construction codes and plans.
- Responds to questions and concerns from the public, contractors, architects, and engineers regarding construction projects.

Inspector I - $23.59/hour minimum
Inspector II - $24.76/hour minimum
Inspector III - $27.30/hour minimum
13 paid holidays, 12 paid sick days, and 10 paid vacation days
37.5 hour work week

Minimum Qualifications:- High School Diploma or equivalent AND over three (3) years of related experience, OR
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience required to perform the essential position functions,
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License (or out-of-state with ability to obtain the same)
- Advanced Work Zone certification
- Trenching and Shoring certification
- Grade C (or higher) Water Distribution certificate issued by the North Carolina Water Treatment Facility Operators Board of Certification (NCWTFOBC) or willingness to obtain after hired.

-Applicants will be considered for all three levels of Construction Inspector. Minimum Qualifications are as follows:Construction Inspector I - High School Diploma with 3 years of relevant experience.
Construction Inspector II - Associate's Degree in Construction Management, Construction Technology, or a related field; supplemented by 2 years of relevant experience.
Construction Inspector III - Associate's Degree in Construction Management, Construction Technology, or a related field; supplemented by 5 years of relevant experience.
