About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator III in the Parks & Recreation department. The Parks & Recreation department oversees the maintenance, improvement, and operation of City parks and facilities, ensuring they are safe, clean, and accessible for the community. This role involves driving and operating specialized vehicles and equipment to support construction, maintenance, and repair projects within City park properties.
What you’ll be doing:
- Maneuver heavy equipment and operate complex mechanisms involving digging, grading, loading, and moving earth and materials for City park maintenance and construction.
- Operate equipment such as excavators, track hoes, and backhoes for skilled digging and trenching.
- Use track or rubber-tired loaders to transport materials over short distances.
- Operate bulldozers, scrapers, and compactors to move earth, gravel, and other materials.
- Drive large tractor-trailer rigs and low boys to transport construction equipment to and from job sites.
- Inspect and prepare equipment for daily operation and perform light maintenance as needed.
- Perform manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
- Follow established safety procedures, use safety equipment, and wear protective gear.
- Communicate with supervisors, City employees, and the public to coordinate work activities and resolve issues.
- Perform other related duties as required.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
- Education: High school diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in heavy equipment operation or a related field.
- Experience: At least two years of experience in heavy equipment operation or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Must obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire. Must also obtain and maintain Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification.
