What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Technician - Streets position at City of Athens?
Performs street maintenance of rights-of-way in a safe, effective, and efficient manner. Duties include operating equipment, machines, tools and work aids: backhoe, front-end loader, trenchers, skid steer loaders, jack hammer, air compressor, pumps, signs and traffic signals, dump trucks and other vehicles and equipment.
- Performs street repair and maintenance including patching asphalt streets, repair concrete streets and sidewalks, catch basins, manholes and storm sewer lines.
- Assists in the installation and repair of storm sewers, water lines, storm drain junctions, and the cleaning of storm sewer lines and drainage ditches.
- Operates various small equipment and large vehicles.
- Maintains vehicles and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Performs routine maintenance to equipment on a daily basis.
- Identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
- Notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority.
- Follows departmental policies and procedures.
- Reports City code violations to supervisor.
- Responds to emergencies as needed.
- May be required to work on a twenty-four (24) hour stand-by on call basis.
- Performs tree trimming on street rights-of-way.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
- Knowledge of general maintenance, construction, tools, and equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in performing maintenance, construction and repair work.
- Ability to perform the specialized semi-skilled maintenance and repair.
- Ability to perform strenuous work, including heavy lifting.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent, plus one year of general maintenance experience preferred
- Possession of a valid State of Texas Class C driver's license.
