Summer Day Camp Instructor

The City of Athens is seeking day camp instructors to assist in the daily operation of eight one-week long summer youth camps for children ages 5- 12 years old dealing with various themes. Day Camp Instructors assist in planning and implementing activities to assigned groups and supervise campers. This position sets up and helps clean up required equipment and supplies for planned activities, participates and leads campers in all planned and unplanned activities, sets an example for peer staff and campers by being enthusiastic, involved, and promoting respect for camp, counselors, equipment, and other campers. The campers also take various walking field trips and visit the Athens City Pool twice a week, led and supervised by Day Camp Instructors.
This is an 8 Week Summer Camp program that runs from June 9, 2025 – August 8, 2025 (with no camp June 30, 2025 – July 4, 2025). There will be a mandatory week of staff training June 2, 2025 through June 6, 2025 prior to the start of camp. The schedule is 40 hours a week with a daily 8 hour shift between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is a seasonal position expected to last about 120 days. The starting pay rate is $12.00/hr.
Responsibilities:
- Help plan and implement activities assigned to camps/groups.
- Assist in supervision of campers throughout daily planned activities.
- Set up and help clean up the required equipment and supplies for planned activities.
- Lead campers in all planned and unplanned activities.
- Provide leadership to assigned camps/groups to ensure high quality programming.
- Become highly involved in camper activities.
- Create trustworthy relationships with campers.
- Promote enthusiasm for activities and help guide campers to learning experiences.
- Always ensures the safety of all campers.
- Keeps camp areas clean.
- Adheres to all applicable laws, policies and procedures presented by the Athens Community Center.
- Maintains good working relationships with employees, the public, parents of campers and campers.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Additional Requirements/Qualifications:
- Candidates committed to working the entire season are strongly preferred.
- Education/Experience: High School Graduate accompanied by additional vocational/technical/or other specialized formal education or equivalent preferred.
- Experience working in a camp setting with grades k- 6 preferred.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Qualified candidate must have current CPR/First Aid Certification prior to start of camp.
- Additional training in communicable disease and child abuse prevention is required.
- Candidate must satisfactorily complete a BCI and FBI background check.
Physical Demands:
Applicant must be able to participate in all camp activities. This position requires standing and walking several hours each day. It will also require bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching above shoulders, pushing/pulling, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
