General Description and Classification Standards

Plans, delivers and evaluates emergency medical services, (EMS) classroom, laboratory, hospital and pre-hospital clinical instruction and provides these services and support activities required for optimal student learning and effective educational programming.

Decision Making

Uses independent judgment and discretion in managing subordinates including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards and resolving problems.

Leadership Provided

Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other employees. May lead or instruct less experienced workers in high level or technical jobs.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Implements on-the-job training for new employees and remedial training for employees with performance deficiencies; developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating all phases of the clinical program; assisting and supporting the program's administrative, continuing education and logistical sectors; and processing associated paperwork.
  • Serves as liaison between the clinical faculty, the program director and the affiliate agencies in regards to scheduling and coordination of clinical rotation. T
  • Trains probationary employees and directs remediation of an assigned employee; mentors EMS students of all levels; demonstrate best practices in pre-hospital care.
  • Assists with developing and monitoring the administration of program quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Maintains complete office and student records, process reports, forms and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner, checking for accuracy, correctness and completeness of all data.
  • Evaluates and recommends for approval, qualifications of program faculty and staff and coordinates activities to include instructors, evaluators and preceptors.
  • Participates in recruitment and selection of new employees.
  • Assists with the development of EMS programs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.

Knowledge of current best-practices for the EMS profession at all levels of credentials; knowledge of EMS regulations, policies and operating procedures; and knowledge of equipment and supplies used in emergency care of patients and victims of accidents.

Skill in communicating effectively and coherently with the 911 emergency center, other EMS units, public service agencies and publics using existing communications equipment; and skill in maintaining effective working relationships with other EMS agencies, government officials, the general public and other employees.

Ability to remain calm in emergency and life-threatening situations, gather information from patients and bystanders through interviews, observation, physical assessments and use of diagnostic equipment such as a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and thermometer; and ability to operate an ambulance or other emergency vehicle for long periods of time during both day and night, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow, and in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits.
