Director of LGBTQ Affairs Job Description

Salary: $95,000 - $125,000 commensurate with experience

The Mayor’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (MOEDI) works to identify and develop systems & behavioral change solutions that advance equitable outcomes to continue Moving Atlanta Forward. The Director of LGBTQ Affairs, who reports to the Chief Equity Officer, defines, implements and measures the strategic priorities related to LGBTQ communities across Atlanta in an effort to advance inclusion, access and opportunity.

Job Overview

The Director of LGBTQ Affairs serves to design, develop, assess and advance accessibility, support and equality for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) communities in Atlanta through the lens and efforts of local government. This leader translates and implements LGBTQ and gender equity efforts intro strategies, best practices, events, advocacy initiatives and responsive actions that support and advance the LGBTQ community in Atlanta and their allied partners.

Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive .

  • Manage and strengthen the relationship of the City with LGBTQ community members
  • Align the City’s strategic priorities to efforts in support of LGBTQ communities (i.e., affordable housing, economic mobility, health equity, etc.)
  • Develop strategies, set programmatic priorities and plan and execute research and advocacy to best defend and advance LGBTQ rights as human rights globally
  • Collaborate with MOEDI staff across strategic areas to align and amplify EDI efforts at the City of Atlanta
  • Identifying and defining the specific needs of the LGBTQ Community around issues of intersectionality including LGBTQ People of Color/BIPOC people, Veterans, people with disabilities, seniors and other intersectional identities
  • Serve as the primary staff partner for the Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Board and liaison for the Human Rights Commission, Atlanta Police Department (APD), Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD), Atlanta Corrections & other City departments
  • Keep the Mayor and City of Atlanta Senior Officials abreast of events and actions impacting the LGBTQ community locally and nationally
  • Overall responsibility for operational, programmatic and financial management of opportunities and concerns related to the numerous Atlantans that comprise the LGBTQ Community
  • Connect and amplify the City’s LGBTQ ecosystem including nonprofits, research organizations, senior volunteers and leaders, businesses, community groups, funders, service providers with a focus on promoting integration and collaboration
  • Facilitates communications related to the LGBTQ Affairs including speeches, media requests, social media and the Division’s newsletter and websites.
  • Support learning and development for internal employees related to equity, justice, LGBTQ affairs and deliver annual training and impact measurement.
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of signature events (receptions, public forums, training, Pride festivities, etc.) that engage various sectors of Atlanta’s LGBTQ communities and allies
  • Work in collaboration with the City of Atlanta’s Law Department & Intergovernmental Affairs teams and partner organizations to monitor, introduce and advocate for legislation that protects and advances the rights of LGBTQ Atlantans/

legislation/legislative proposals affecting LGBTQ Atlantans on a Federal, State, County or City levels

  • Represent the City at public events, trainings, conferences and in the media

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully . It is not an exhaustive list.

Considerable knowledge of the following :

  • Knowledge of the LGBTQ rights movement worldwide and experience negotiating the political landscape related to this diverse community
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, develop short- and long-term strategies and develop innovative practices and programs
  • Budget oversight, tracking and reporting/Maintains records, both manually and through automated methods, and prepares accurate reports, correspondence, etc.
  • Ensure effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure success that can be communicated to internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop and support research that analyzes and presents data related to the needs and experiences of LGBTQ individuals in clear and compelling methods and supports the measurement of progress

Salary : $95,000 - $125,000
