General Description And Classification Standards
The Surveyor I reports to the Survey Manager. The Surveyor I conducts field work which includes boundary surveying, topographic surveying, As-Built surveys, and be able to identify and differentiate between common underground utilities. Ability to interpret and understand legal descriptions, plans and maps that are used daily. Ability to use and be familiar with all current surveying equipment used daily. This includes G.P.S. R.T.K. Equipment. Being able to work in different groups when needed. This position possesses strong organizational, time management abilities, including the ability to make independent field decisions. The Surveyor I establishes and maintains effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public. Under general supervision, this position exercises leadership over complex projects and trains other skilled associates when needed.
Supervision Received:
Work under the direction of a Professional Land Surveyor to complete surveys for the Department of Watershed Management and other City of Atlanta departments. This employee works in a field survey crew assisting a Survey Party Chief (Surveyor 3) by providing technical level support.

Education and Experience – High school diploma, or equivalent and one year experience as a part of a field survey (e.g. operating survey instruments, preparing mathematical calculations, locating traverse points and temporary benchmarks, checking survey calculations, or similar duties) or other work requiring an ability to use and operate survey equipment or read and interpret plans, deeds, plats, maps, and survey description.
Licensures and Certifications – Must possess a valid Georgia driver's license which must remain valid throughout your employment with the City of Atlanta.

Work Environment:
Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Work is typically performed in adverse environments in the field and outdoors). Must be in good physical condition to sustain working environment.
Lifting Requirements:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

- Performs routine computations of coordinates and assists in the preparation of survey information.
- Uses surveying equipment as directed.
- Locates, establishes or reestablishes property line corners and boundaries using surveying equipment.
- Follows safety rules and procedures in the field.
- Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform job functions.
- May perform other duties as assigned.

- Ability to use surveying instruments.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
