This is a skilled cashier - customer service position that involves a lot of public contact in person, by phone, e-mail and fax. Cashier enters utility payments and fees for other Departments into cash receipts program. Cashier assists customers with understanding their bills and light research concerning billing issues. The job requires the ability to multitask and also to remain calm and confident under stressful customer interaction. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Customer Service Specialist. Does related work as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Welcomes and assists individuals that come into City Hall, answers telephone and deals with customers in courteous and professional manner.
- Frontline customer service in regard to setting up new services, transfer of services, termination of services and processing of all City payments, refers difficult or unusual situations to Customer Service Supervisor.
- Handles customer inquiries, questions and complaints related to billing, billing adjustments, disconnects for nonpayment etc.
- Handles money with accuracy, posts payments for utilities and other City Department’s fees in the form of cash, check, money orders and credit cards.
- Opens mail payments, sorts and distribute checks and stubs, balances payments to stubs, and validate necessary receipts.
- Scans into Laserfiche system for record retention.
- Responsible for boxing and identifying Department records for State record retention requirements.
- Tracks return mail cost in Excel. Also, contacts customers when mail piece has been returned to be sure mail is going to the correct address and updates utility mailing records based on conversation with customer.
- Assists customers with the paying of their bills via B2P IVR and website.
- Closes out cash register daily, counting and balancing cash receipts, backing up totals, and preparing daily deposits.
- Serves as backups for the Customer Service Supervisor for Bill2Pay and Paymode.
- Assists Customer Service Supervisor with the ordering of office supplies, typing and mailing correspondence
- Participate in customer service training, assists in training other cashiers in office policy and procedures.
- Perform all other related work as required.
Education and Experience: A High School Diploma or its equivalent is required and at least one (1) year of cash handling experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Licenses and/or Certificates: None required
Knowledge of cash handling standard procedures. Knowledge of procedures, methods and equipment used in the modern office environment and the ability to adapt to new technologies as they become available. The ability to learn utility service connection and termination procedures, and other City department operations. Acquire the ability to explain City code and policies to customers. Be able to learn and adhere to safety rules and regulations. Knowledge of basic bookkeeping principles, practices, methods, and procedures are a plus. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is beneficial. Acquire the ability to learn to use our existing office machinery and data processing equipment and software. Knowledge of basic cash procedures and provide proof of your ability to balance your daily transactions. Demonstrate the ability to post payments to utility accounts with speed and accuracy. Demonstrate the ability to quickly and accurately enter customer information into our utility applications. Demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Demonstrate the ability to follow detailed work procedures. Learn to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Show the ability to handle customer inquiries and complaints courteously and professionally under stressful circumstances.
