Public Health Nurse
Salary Range: $75,159 - $101,465
The City of Attleboro seeks a Public Health Nurse who under the general direction of the Health Officer, works with other members of the Health Department to promote health and prevent disease throughout the Attleboro community. Provides skilled nursing services in accordance with state regulations and Health Department duties and policies. Exercises considerable professional judgment in the interpretation and application of public health and emergency management practices, laws and regulations to frequently changing conditions, threats and challenges.
Duties include Maintains communicable disease surveillance system through epidemiological tracking of reported disease; documents and preserves investigative data and reports information to state as required by law. Enforces isolation and quarantine regulations. Interprets symptoms and laboratory results. Designated case manager for all active TB cases in the City, including providing directly observed therapy of suspected non-compliant TB patients. Conducts TB testing as needed. Maintains vaccine depot including obtaining and distributing vaccines. Compiles mandated statistics on vaccines and submits to state. Conducts immunization clinics throughout the City. Maintains confidential records in computer system. Consults with private and public schools on health issues of mutual interest. Performs mandated health screenings of children in private schools. Conducts public health screenings for elderly and chronically ill residents at various times and locations. Participates in collaborative efforts with community groups and other health care providers to promote wellness in the City. Acts as health care consultant to day care providers in City. Makes home assessments for residents when indicated with regard to nutrition, housing, immunizations, screening for family health services and supportive counseling. Mandated reporter for abuse and neglect of children, elderly, disabled or hospitalized. Participates in local emergency and bioterrorism planning groups and performs duties delegated to this position if plans are implemented. Reports all possible outbreaks to the state as required by state law and emergency and bioterrorism plans. Performs related work as required. Responds to emerging pathogen issues including but not limited to, West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Influenza, COVID-19 and HPAI. Conducts inspections of recreational camps in coordination with department staff. Coordinates with Department staff regarding foodborne illness complaints and follow-ups. Helps to oversee the use of the Medical Reserve Corps Program. Assists with Department budgeting. Collaborates with Regional Public Health nurses on public health initiatives. Attends various professional and educational programs to obtain continuing education credits for registration and license renewal. Maintains Massachusetts Association of Public Health Nurses (MAPHN) membership. Performs related work as required.
Requires Graduation from an accredited nursing program for registered nurses, with a Bachelor of Science degree; two years’ experience in community or public health nursing; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid state driver’s license required. Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. RN license from state of Massachusetts. Current CPR certification required. Certification in vision, hearing and scoliosis screening from Massachusetts Department of Health required. Certification in Basic Incident Command required.
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern public health nursing. Knowledge of applicable state and local public health laws and regulations. Familiarity with community and state facilities and resources providing medical and related social services. Ability to appraise individual and community health needs and problems and to interpret medical findings and public health laws and regulations to the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, school personnel, physicians, the elderly, parents, community agencies, and the general public. Ability to maintain pertinent medical records and charts and to prepare reports. Must be skilled in performing nursing techniques and the use of various medical equipment. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and compassion for people of all ages.
