Exciting Opportunity for Law Students!

Are you a highly motivated law student eager to gain real-world legal experience this summer? The City of Auburn Legal Department is looking for a passionate Rule 9 Intern to join our dynamic team! This is your chance to work alongside experienced attorneys, step inside the courtroom, and immerse yourself in the fast-paced world of municipal law.

As a Rule 9 Intern, you'll work directly under the Deputy City Attorney, assisting the Civil Division and gaining valuable insight into the role of a City Attorney. While this position doesn't involve direct criminal work, you'll develop a strong understanding of criminal law, including procedures, policies, and operations. Expect hands-on exposure to legal forms, hearings, and interactions with our skilled support staff.

Primary Duties

Your primary duties in this role will include

  • Reviewing, drafting, and analyzing contracts to ensure compliance and accuracy
  • Conducting in-depth legal research on civil matters to support ongoing cases and policy decisions
  • Drafting legal correspondence and memoranda, offering legal advice in coordination with your supervisor
  • Providing case updates and communicating directly with clients, strengthening your legal communication skills
  • Observing court proceedings and hearings, gaining first-hand exposure to legal processes
  • Assisting with policy development and legal strategy discussions
  • Tackling additional projects and assignments as determined by the department's caseload-each day offers a new challenge and learning opportunity!

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for a Rule 9 internship, you must meet the qualifications as outlined for a LicensedLegal Intern. Additional rules can be found here.

We are looking for students who

  • Will have completed two(2) years of law school by their start date
  • Possess strong legal research and writing skills
  • Can demonstrate ability to workwell with others in a fast-paced setting

We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program, fromJune 16th - August 22nd. Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program. If you are a top candidate, your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process.

Our core business hours are Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch. We are physically in the office every day, and you will have an assigned desk with a City issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work, so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.

The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows

Postgraduates: Step 3 - $22.48
