What are the responsibilities and job description for the B & O Tax Intern position at City of Auburn?
- Work with delinquent taxpayers and unregistered businesses to promote tax filing and license registration compliance.
- Review and examine tax returns for accuracy, classifcation, and proper reporting.
- Process manually filed returns by ensuring information is recorded in the City's tax and licensing program.
- Maintain confidentiality of tax information and ensure compliance with applicable state laws and City codes.
- Provide general support to the Finance Department, including administrative tasks, reporting, and data entry.
- Research on municipal accounting principles and state legislation affecting the B&O Tax code.
To be eligible for this position, you must be:
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field; or have obtained one in the last 12 months. AND
- Enrolled in, or have successfully completed, an Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration college course.
We would love it if you:
- Strong analytical and research skills with an interest in tax compliance and municipal finance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively manage multiple projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and financial management software is a plus.
- Experience in a municipal or government setting is desirable but not required.
We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program, from June 16th - August 22nd. Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program. If you are a top candidate, your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process.
Our core business hours are Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch. We are physically in the office every day, and you will have an assigned desk with a City issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work, so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.
The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:Freshman & Sophomores: Step 1 - $19.42
Juniors & Seniors: Step 2 - $20.95
Postgraduates: Step 3 - $22.48
