The City of Aurora is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for Equipment Service Worker in the Division of Fleet.
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of all City vehicles and equipment. Using a wide variety of automotive maintenance tools, diagnostic equipment, and related devices to maintain, diagnose and repair components on all types of equipment and vehicles. Repairs and replaces gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, clutches, brakes, radiator, universal, differentials, hydraulic and exhaust systems. Duties performed within a vehicle repair facility, on the road, or at an outside location.
Other duties of this position may include but are not limited to: Performing preventative and routine maintenance and repair work on all types of City vehicles and equipment as well as locating, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical defects; Utilizes testing and repair equipment to diagnose, locate, and faults found in various 6, 12, and 24 volt electrical systems; Performs welding and fabrication in forming, bending, and tempering metals on various vehicles or equipment; Prepares list of parts needed for automobile and equipment repair and forwards to supervisor for approval; Installs, maintains, and repairs special equipment accessories such as sirens, emergency, lights and tool storage systems; Drives service trucks and performs road service calls, drive vehicles for road testing to and from maintenance facilities and runs errands to supply houses; May instruct subordinate employees engaged in performing a variety of routine tasks in the maintenance and servicing of City vehicles and equipment; Utilizes towing vehicles and equipment to recover and transport City vehicles and equipment; Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Successful candidates should have working knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel mechanics as applied to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment; Working knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of various automobiles, trucks, vans, and heavy equipment; Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment; Ability to weld and to perform simple blacksmith operations; Extensive knowledge of all types of automotive shop tools and equipment.
This position requires a high school diploma or G.E.D.; preferably supplemented by completion of vocational courses in automotive mechanics; Requires a minimum of three years' experience in servicing and maintaining automotive vehicles and equipment with progressive levels of duties and responsibilities; Requires possession of a Class 'B' CDL within 6 months of hire.
Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to a written exam, physical, drug screen, and background check.
This is a full time, union position. Beginning hourly pay is $31.40/hour, after 6 months $32.12/hour, after 1 year $32.83/hour, and annual increases thereafter. Potential for advancement within 6 months of hire, management may make the recommendation to promote to Equipment Technician (beginning hourly pay is $36.62/hour).
This position may require you to work the first, or second shift.
