ACCOUNTABILITY: Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor and in compliance with State Statute and City Codes.
JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision, assists in the operation, construction and maintenance of the water production, distribution, sewer collection systems and repair of streets, storm sewers, municipal building and grounds and equipment; on assigned shifts or as directed, performs on-call duty, emergency service for Water, Sewer and Departments, including weekend checks of Water and Sewer Facilities. Drives trucks and operates light to heavy equipment depending on the job; assists as needed with maintenance and all related work of parks, cemeteries, and waste site.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs duties and work in the safe operation and maintenance, repairs, and construction of water/sewer/street infrastructure including but not limited to manholes, services pumps, lift stations, controls, and related equipment in the water distribution and sewer collections systems; cuts, fits, lays and taps pipes and mains, makes daily rounds, reads water meters, lubricates and services pumps and observes operation; operates jet machine, clearing obstructions from sewer lines; construct streets, curbs, sidewalks, and storm sewer lines and inlets; may work alone; removes, forms, and finishes concrete; checks vehicles and equipment for proper operation condition; operates vehicles and trucks; operates motor grader, truck with snowplow or loader in the removal of snow from streets; installs street signs and snow fences; operates truck with salt and gravel spreader; cuts down and removes trees and stumps from right-of-way and other City properties; flushes, repairs, tars, and gravels streets; grades and rocks alleys; paints street markings; sweeps streets; operates saw, router, and tar kettle; assists Cemetery Superintendent with opening/closing of graves, assist other departments within the City as needed and assigned by the Public Works Supervisor.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for his/her own safety and the safety of fellow employees; perform on-call duties as needed and on a rotating bases, including weekend checks of Water and Sewer Facilities; when required, may assist in emergency service or repairs for the Water Department; works with other departments when necessary, including snow removal and perform other duties as assigned by his/her supervisor.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to operate light and heavy equipment; service and perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and vehicles; inspects materials, equipment, vehicles, and supplies on hand; maintain pumping records; may assist with the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Works; must be able to enter confined spaces properly, climbing down narrow ladders to service meters or clear obstructions from piping; knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work in the water distribution and sewer collection systems requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including but not limited to walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, and climbing; ability to transport themselves to and from various locations throughout the water distribution and sewer collection systems. Duties require the ability to tolerate an indoor and outdoor work environment including adverse weather conditions, which may also include but are not limited to contact with dirt, dust, chemicals, cleaning solvents, and disease-causing bacteria, noise; ability to lift up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis. Must have the ability to operate safely hand and power tools and equipment utilized in the upkeep, repair, and maintenance tasks. ability to climb up onto and down from equipment; ability to work evenings/weekends; ability to work 12 hour shifts with snow removal; ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from High School and one year prior experience as a laborer in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and streets; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
