NATURE OF WORK: A professional position responsible for the prevention and extinguishing of fires, the protection and saving of life & property, and the enforcement of City and Slate fire prevention codes, as well as any law pertaining to the prevention and control of fires.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following statements describe the principal functions of the job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned. Conduct fire safety inspections of new building/structures under construction and modifications to older building/structures to ensure fire code compliance. Advise/instruct owners and occupants on tire safety methods in accordance with fire prevention codes. Issue notices of non-compliance as necessary. Inspect projects upon completion and sign final approval permits. Inspect construction sites as necessary to ensure compliance with the approved construction documents, and the Florida Fire Prevention Code.

  • Perform annual inspections as adopted by the City of Avon Park.
  • Conduct plan review for fire code compliance.
  • Check permit applications and building/structure plans for fire code compliance. Discuss any recommended modifications or changes with contractor and/or owner.
  • Assist with cause and origin fire investigations.
  • Issues notices of violations or non-compliance.
  • Conduct routine patrols of assigned areas to check for violations or hazardous conditions. Issue notices of violations or non-compliance. Inspect storage of explosives, flammable materials and other hazardous materials.
  • Investigate complaints of fire safety hazards which are reported. Conduct re-inspections as directed.
  • Assists with coordinating and participates in promoting fire prevention and safely education throughout the city also known as Community Risk Reduction
  • May investigate false alarms and take necessary actions to correct them.
  • May serve as Safety Officer for fires and other emergency situations when staffing permits.
  • Respond to fires and other emergency conditions, to include on-the-scene fighting of fires.
  • Respond productively to change and perform all other related tasks as required and as directed.
  • This is a Disaster Essential position.
  • Work and coordinate with country building officials.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of minimum standards as required by the State of Florida
  • Successful completion of all medical and fitness requirements

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Good working knowledge of fire safety laws, rules and regulations, including the fire prevention code. Knowledge of the principles and practices of fire safety and inspection techniques.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations related to the storage and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to read plans and/or blueprints to ensure fire safety compliance in new structures.
  • Ability to recognize and define fire safety hazards and to recommend effective remedial measures in existing structures.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques, fireground safety, and emergency medical treatment.
  • Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, supervisors, directors, elected officials, vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to pass an annual NFPA physical examination

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Florida Certified Fire Inspector
  • Florida Certification as a Firefighter
  • Florida State or National Registry EMT License.
  • Possession of an appropriate Florida Driver’s License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Meet physical requirements as indicated for State certification
