Job Description
The City of Avondale has an opportunity for an Emergency Service Dispatcher to support public safety agencies during the two annual NASCAR events hosted by the Phoenix Raceway, as well as during other events or incidents requiring dispatch assistance from the City's Incident Management Team. This position is temporary and typically supports the races held in March and November each year.
Answer emergency and non-emergency calls; obtains accurate, essential information to process each call according to established protocols; uses GIS and records management software to enter all relevant information for resource dispatch and incident documentation; dispatches call and information to public and non-public safety units via a mobile radio system; maintains an accurate status and location of public safety units; maintains a computerized log of call for service and units dispatched; and monitors city security and fire alarm systems received through alarm system and dispatches emergency units as appropriate.
Essential Functions
Performs customer service functions by answering telephones and assisting emergency and non-emergency calls.
Handles dispatching by contacting emergency responders and sending medical and fire emergency services to people in distress using a radio console and entering call data into records management systems at the same time as the call is being dispatched. Maintains service log for each call.
Monitors radio traffic, security cameras, and fire alarm system and dispatches emergency units and responders, as needed.
Communicates with other dispatchers and members of the Incident Management Team to coordinate fluid emergency responses and track pertinent information.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicant must currently be employed full-time or part-time by a governmental agency in the state of Arizona as a Dispatcher for a Public Safety entity or have been employed in this capacity within the previous five years.
Two (2) years of customer service experience is required.
Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.
Supplemental Information
Work requires the ability to read state manuals, department policies and procedures, warrants, codes, and reports.
Work requires the ability to perform basic math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Work requires the ability to write sufficiently articulate documentation to provide dispatchers with clear and concise call information.
Planning responsibilities include occasionally scheduling coverage and prioritizing calls for service.
Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action.
The incumbents in this position will work in a team environment alongside others in the organization. These members may include work units or departments within the City such as the Police, Public Works, and Fire & Medical Departments, all of which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making authority. In addition, incumbents will work with other individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various local jurisdiction, county, state, and federal agencies may also be required of the employee. Telephone conversations are conducted with customers and the general public, many of whom can be very upset / irate thus requiring a calm and professional demeanor of the incumbent. Employees must maintain regular attendance and the ability to work in a constant state of alertness while exercising appropriate safety practices.
No benefits are associated with this temporary position with the exception of Arizona State Retirement after meeting 20 / 20 rule.
