Job Description

The Park Ranger Supervisor’s primary responsibility is to oversee Park Rangers who are responsible for controlling and securing various City parks within the City of Avondale and enforcing rules, regulations, and ordinances related to Parks & Recreation area usage. Supervises park rangers including safety protocols, PPR files, annual performance evaluations, timecard management, and staff scheduling.

Essential Functions

Supervises park rangers in the performance of their duties of patrolling City parks and trail areas by remaining visible to park patrons and engaging the general public, ultimately creating a safe atmosphere. Provides customer services professionally and courteously to staff and visitors.

Reviews work schedules, timecard entries, written reports, and log entries to ensure they are clear, brief, and accurate.

Assists as a backup supervisor to the Animal Control Unit.

Actively supervises the day-to-day services and responsibilities of park rangers.

Maintains daily activity logs; responds to traffic accidents providing traffic control for the Police Department when needed; and assists in emergencies by notifying Police or Fire services.

Answers phone calls for service in the parks. Responsible for communicating via police radio or computer.

Observes, coaches, and provides continuous, constructive feedback to park rangers on their performance of the unit’s professional duties and behaviors to ensure yearly performance goals are met.

Manages PPR files for employees and annual performance evaluations. Prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations and submits justifications for budget items.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.

An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in criminal justice or a related field is preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a park ranger, security officer, police/community services officer, police/detention officer, or a related field.

Supervisory experience in varied administrative support work, preferably with experience in the supervision of operations in a law enforcement setting, is preferred.

Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

A valid Arizona Operator’s Driver License.

Must complete and pass a field training program. Must complete Terminal Operator Certification (TOC) within 6 months of hire. Required to wear a ballistic vest and body-worn Camera (BWC), complete a taser certification, and be trained in Defense Tactics (DT) with less lethal weapons and tactics.

Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and fingerprinting.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read training materials, police reports, City codes, laws, and general correspondence.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Work will require the ability to write reports, letters, victim rights forms, witness statements, and general correspondence.

Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a group of regular employees in a work unit, including providing input on hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness, and realigning work as needed.

Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies and procedures.

Strives to excel in meeting the needs of both internal and external customers in a fair and just manner. Delivers high-quality customer service with a commitment to continuous improvement. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the employee.

Employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
