Job Description

The Senior Water Production Mechanic supports the operations & maintenance activities within the City of Avondale's Water Production & Treatment division. The position is required to maintain the various treatment and production equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Daily assignments include maintenance functions such as: installation, troubleshooting, predicitive, preventive and reactive maintenance on typical and specialized water production and treatment related equipment, including pumps, valves, motors, compressors, filters and more. Complex work assignments require the mechanic to be well versed in several of the maintenance trades.

Under direct supervision of the Water Production & Treatment Supervisor, the Senior Water Production Mechanic is expected to continually strive to improve operations & maintenance, decrease equipment downtime, streamline work practices, maintain accurate records via the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and perform other related duties as required.

This position may be required to participate in the 'on-call' program, as needed, and would respond to after-hour call outs, intermittently. Work may be performed independently or in small teams.

Essential Functions

Troubleshooting mechanical equipment, responding to emergency calls for repairs and operating machinery with an emphasis on servicing, repairing and maintaining equipment.

Performs repairs and service of solid-state components, low voltage equipment, and medium 3-phase voltage mechanical and electrical assets. Performs repairs and services to heavy industrial and light industrial machinery used in the water production and treatment industry.

Independently investigates equipment failures to determine the cause of failure and take necessary corrective actions. Communicate with operations staff on maintenance activities, and coordinate planned installation, repairs, and preventative maintenance work.

Independently researches and orders materials, maintenance supplies and new equipment from outside vendors. Accurately maintains a parts inventory and equipment information within the CMMS software. Purchases and installs new equipment or components to upgrade, modify, improve or repair existing mechanical or electrical equipment.

Utilizes the City's CMMS to document maintenance, work activities and other relevant information. Utilizes the same software to initiate and close out Work Orders, monitor for recurring issues, order replacement parts, document equipment failures and more.

Assists in creating and supporting a safe work environment that complies with SOPs, OSHA, NEC, Federal and State regulations and City of Avondale policies & procedures. Always follows and promotes a culture of safety by reviewing and implementing all safety policies and practices. Will contribute to the development of new SOPs or JHAs utilizing industry knowledge and experience.

May assist water production operators with occasional tasks including operating, testing or operator tasks that require multiple individuals to perform the task safely.

May be called upon to assist other divisions within the Department and performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalency is required.

Work requires a sound knowledge mechanical and repair principles. Knowledge obtained through a vocational school or technical college is preferred.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience performing maintenance activities on machinery and/or industrial-related equipment such as valves, vertical turbine pumps, submersible pumps, chlorinators, check valves, pressure reducing valves, electrical motors or similar.

Maintenance experience in the water or wastewater field is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if sufficient to perform the essential duties of the role as listed herein.

Must possess an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Water Treatment Operator Grade I Certification or be able to obtain the Certification within six (6) months of hire and must be able to maintain certification for the duration of employment.

A valid Arizona Driver's license is required.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read schematics, construction plans, technical specifications, regulations, permits, Safety Data Sheets, O&M manuals, standard operating procedures, repair manuals and more.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Work requires the ability to write daily logs, reports, work orders and general correspondence. Work requires the ability to draft memos and/or correspondence to internal and/or external customers.

Planning responsibilities include effective time management for daily work assignments and inspections; the position provides information to supervisors to resolve/discuss issues with water treatment equipment.

Position has no responsibility for supervision of others. Works directly with and collaborates with other Public Works staff. Assumes responsibility to complete assigned projects with available resources.

Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives, and policies. Completes tasks under the guidance of the Water Production & Treatment Supervisor, the Lead Utilities Mechanic and other system operators. Exercises initiative, independent analytical skills and evaluative judgment.

This position makes contact with others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City, which may be involved in decision making or provide approval for purchases or projects.

This position makes contact with residents, customers, outside entities, groups and the general public and must represent the City in a professional manner, including attitude and appearance at all times when required.

Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner is required.

Employee must maintain regular in-person attendance.
