Job Description

The City of Avondale has an opportunity for a Traffic Signal Technician in the Engineering Department. This is a FLSA non-exempt, full-time position with benefits.

Performs skilled/semi-skilled work associated with streetlight operation, repair, and maintenance duties; performs related work as required.

Essential Functions

Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains streetlights including lamp, photocell, ballast, fuses and related devices. Rewires ballasts and light poles, locates power sources to streetlights and installs street light wiring systems.

Repairs and maintains traffic signals and poles as needed. Inspects new signals & City Center Project installations. Documents history of signal repairs for record keeping,

Responds to emergencies, after-hours calls, outages, and system failures as required.

Maintains inventory, installation, maintenance, repair, replacement records, and related work order records.

Coordinates repairs with other City departments to ensure proper traffic control and other safety measures.

Trains Traffic Operation Assistants and other employees as necessary.

Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, power and hand tools related to this position. Performs general maintenance and cleaning on equipment, machinery and tools. Keeps inventory of tools, materials and supplies. Ensures adequate inventory of materials.

Monitors City streets to identify downed poles, inoperative lights, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention; initiates corrective action

Operates, maintains, configures and repairs the Traffic Operations Central Advanced Traffic Management System. Operates, maintains, configures and repairs the Traffic Operations CCTV video Surveillance Systems. Installs, removes and maintains wireless communications & video detection.

Participates in Traffic Signal & ITS pre-construction meetings as needed. Reviews and approves special provisions, material submittals, specifications, standard details, construction plans/ blueprints. Meets with contractors and vendors for site inspections and inventory deployment.

Enter controller programming per engineering's timing and programing specs. Measures cross walk lengths; enters in calculated times.

Installs and tests new technologies (ASC3/Smart monitors/CCTV, Video detection, Fiber optic equipment, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

A High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Three (3) years of maintaining, installing, and/or repairing streetlights.

Must possess a Level I Roadway Lighting or Level I Traffic Signal Certification prior to submission of the employment application.

Must obtain a Level II Roadway Lighting Certification within one year from the date of hire.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read work orders.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Work requires the ability to write work orders and reports.

Normal tasks require use of definite procedures, with little deviation. Work requires limited analysis.

The incumbents in this position contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City such as the Streets Division and Engineering which may be involved in decision making or providing approval or decision making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, these incumbents work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the employee. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, brokers and sales representatives. Employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.
