DEFINITION

Under supervision, guards swimmers in pool; enforces regulations; and does related work as required in order to insure the safe use of all public swimming facilities and other duties as directed.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbent may not perform all of the listed functions and / or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address department needs and changing business practices.

  • Supervises the activities of swimmers in and around the pool to see that policies, rules and regulations are observed and that no hazard to safety is created.
  • Helps in cleaning and maintaining the pool and its facilities and equipment.
  • Gives first aid in the event of injuries; assists in opening and closing of the pool.
  • Rescues persons in distress or danger of drowning; warns swimmers of improper activities or dangers.
  • Answers inquiries and gives information pertaining to the pool, its facilities, the swimming program and department in general.
  • Keeps in good physical condition.
  • Acts as swim team coach or assistant coach as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

Qualified candidates must be at least sixteen (16) years of age with a work permit AND must possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate; American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED for the Professional Rescuer or similar certifications from the American Heart Association are also acceptable. A T.B. clearance is required. All certifications must be current and obtained by the time of hire.

Qualified Candidates will be contacted for an Interview and In-Water Exercise for the appointment times listed below :

  • 1st Round : Saturday, March 22, 2025
  • 2nd Round : Saturday. April 12, 2025
  • 3rd Round : Saturday, May 03, 2025 (if needed)

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be available to work split shifts, weekdays, weekends and nights.
  • This position is for the 2025 Summer Aquatics Program.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States and have reliable transportation to and from work.

    Part-time employees are paid an hourly rate based on hours worked and typically work 19 hours or less per week. The City of Azusa does not pay into Social Security, so part-time employees are enrolled in the Accumulation Program for Part-Time and Limited-Service Employees (APPLE). Part-time employees pay 3.75% of wages into this retirement program and the City matches the employee's (3.75% of wages) share.

    Paid Sick Leave :

    Effective July 1, 2015, part-time employees accrue sick leave beginning with the first full pay period of employment on the basis of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. The maximum accrual per year is 48 hours. A waiting period of 90 days is required before an employee may be eligible to use paid sick leave. Although paid sick leave can be carried over year to year, an employee can only accumulate up to a maximum of 48 hours and may use up to 24 hours in any one year.

    This position is not covered by any other medical benefits.

    Part-time employees are not considered to be part of the City of Azusa Merit and Civil Service System and are thus designated as non-classified employees. Part-time employees are "at will" employees and, as such, may be terminated at any time without any right of appeal.
