Job Summary :
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Planning & Zoning, the purpose of this position is to provide technical support and assistance to planning & zoning staff and the general public. The Planning Technician is responsible for the intake and processing of development applications and plans, performing basic research and support tasks, monitoring and updating information related to development and zoning, preparing zoning verification letters, and providing general information and customer service to both planning & zoning partners and residents.
Minimum Job Requirements :
- Associate’s degree or Certification in Planning, GIS, Geography, or related field; or one to two years’ experience working in similar role sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Valid driver’s license
Essential Job Functions :
Accepts applications for all development applications, ensuring proper form completion and inclusion of necessary supporting documentation prior to department submission.Assists in the review of development applications for zoning and land use compliance.Provides information to citizens, developers, engineers, and other City departments on application processes, ordinances, regulations, application statuses, and processing zoning verification requests.Assists in plat review cycle to include regulatory conformance, preparing documents for signature.Provides administrative support for department supported Boards and Commissions, including document preparation and distribution, public hearing notices, scheduling of multiple parties, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, and attending meetings after normal business hours as necessary.Research and compiles information regarding planning / development codes, ordinances, and planning issues.Prepares a variety of routine and non-routine reports related to department activity.Performs other duties as assigned.Knowledge of :
ESRI ArcGISPlanning principles and practices.Land use planning and ordinances.MS Office (Access, Excel, Word, Power Point) requiredEconomic development principles and procedures.City policies and procedures as well as City budgeting process, policies and procedures.Skills in :
ESRI Software Suite.Microsoft Office Products that include Outlook, Word and Excel.Proficient in organizing and prioritizing tasks, managing documentation, and maintaining structured workflows to support efficient planning processes.Providing a high level of external and internal customer service.Using verbal, written, and presentation skills to engage at a high level with all stakeholders.Multitasking in an environment with multiple interruptions.Physical Demands / Work Environment :
Work is performed in a standard office environment with low to moderate noise level the majority of time. Subject to sitting for an extended period of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting and putting away such items as records and office supplies of moderate weight of up to 40 pounds.
