SALARY RANGE: $31,320.00 - $32,729.00 ANNUALLY
BACKGROUND CHECK
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening and must be successfully completed.
PROBATION
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 6-month probation.
ELIGIBILITY
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
CLASS DESCRIPTION
A Hearing and Vision Tester (10 Months) tests the hearing and vision of school children in Baltimore City. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week. Work is performed in school room settings where there is minimal exposure to environmental hazards. Work requires carrying heavy audio and/or visual testing equipment in and out of school buildings.
SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have one year of experience providing services to children or families in a health, education or social services setting.
EXPERIENCE: Have one year of experience providing services to children or families in a health, education or social services setting.
OR
EQUIVALENCY NOTES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:
Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to learn the objectives and techniques of a hearing and vision testing program.
- Ability to learn the skills required to operate the Audiometer, Good-Lite, Snellen Vision Chart and other vision screening equipment.
- Ability to work quickly and thoroughly.
- Ability to establish satisfactory relations with and solicit cooperation from children.
- Ability to deal effectively with school principals, nurses and teachers.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
